    2. Do you know where the name Wateman comes from? It was the given name of my grandfather Wateman/Waitman HASTINGS b. 1819 in Sussex Co., DE. A 'non-Bible' name among the Biblical for almost all other members of the family for generations. Later, there was a Rev. Wateman/Waitman WRIGHT, an itinerant minister in Mercer Co., western OH, and environs, where my HASTINGS family migrated. He would have been younger and I haven't tracked him down.

    1. Re: [DESUSSEX] Can a person be counted twice in a census -- in two different State?
    2. Carolyn K Shearer
    3. Just to add to this reply - in some census years the census takers were paid by the number of people they counted. I have seen certain areas of PA where the enumerator appears to have gone done the valley one day, then back up it the next counting people in the same family on both days with only slight variations. A teacher in one of the National Archives courses also used to talk about the census takers who were drunk on duty from having 'just a bit of refreshment' at each place they stopped. It is a wonder that the census is as good as it is!

    1. Re: [DESUSSEX] Can a person be counted twice in a census -- in two different State?
    2. David Kearney
    3. Helen, A person could be included multiple times in a given federal census in different locations for a variety of reasons. This seems like sort of the "flip side" of an individual, or family, getting missed altogether in a census, although I suspect that "getting counted twice" is less common than getting missed altogether. I wonder if the Census Bureau has any statistics on these occurrences. Sometimes, I think that a family would "include" a family member who was away from home, at the time the census taker came around, in the list of information for the family. In some instances, the individual probably really was at the two different places on the days that the census taker came around to the respective locations, as it wouldn't be on exactly the same day. Researchers should be careful in looking at cases where they have found possible multiple listings ... there would seem to be a good possibility of "false positives." In the case of your Edward Webber, for instance, I would look for other supporting evidence (such as stories from your grandfather of his boarding with the Buckley family, or other written evidence of his boarding out). You pointed out that the birthplace information doesn't match, but, of course it isn't unusual for this information to be in error. Likewise, the birthdate information doesn't match, but, again, it's not unusual for such information to be in error. Are the notes included with the listings that reflect the cross listings actually included on the face of the two relevant original census sheets, or were they first written in a later transcription? If the notes are on the original census sheets, can you tell whether they are written in the hands of the two relevant census takers, or perhaps written on the forms by a researcher at a later date? If the notes were added by a researcher, do you have a source for the information? It's pretty neat that you've found this information for your grandfather, which seems to give a much bigger picture of his activities in 1900 than normally would be the case. You're very lucky! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3Y.2ADI/835.1.1.1.2 Message Board Post: Thanks for the reply -- one question on your other posting: I'm not familiar with "Stokely Stuff and Stock". I have Benjamin's memoir, but would be interested in seeing what other documents are there. Is it paper or electronic, and how does one get access to it? Regarding the John Stokely "problem": I currently have in my DB the same lineage that you do (Thomas -> John -> Oliver, Sr -> Woodman, etc.), but have serious doubts about its accuracy, in part because of the very facts that you stress in your posting. I assumed that John Stockley, son of Oliver, Sr, is the John Stokely, father of Thomas, for the following reasons: 1) his birth (11-13-1731) and death (April 1771) are quite close to those attributed to John Stokely (b. c1730, d. c1770), 2) his wife's name was Mary (probate records), and 3) his place of residence fits Benjamin's place of birth of "7 miles from [Lewes]". There is another version of his lineage that you have probably seen, that being that John's parents were Thomas and Rhoda Delastatias, but I have no hard facts on this lineage. Both versions, however, assume that Thomas was born in Sussex, Co. based the knowledge that his family clearly has strong ties to Sussex Co., he married Elizabeth Montford (also sp! elled Mountford, Mumphford, and Mumford) from Sussex Co., and the family lived there at the time of Benjamin's birth in 1766. Here's the problem: All published records that I have encountered (DAR, Comp. of Amer. Gen., Gen. Records: Early NC Settlers, Eulogy for George Wilson (Thomas' grandson) in Annals of Iowa - Jan 1901, and others) list his place of birth as Edenton, NC (or simply NC). There is no question he has strong roots in Sussex Co. and lived there during his youth. But John Stockley, son of Oliver, shows up throughout the 1750's in Sussex Co. land and probate records -- as you say, he was born and died in Sussex Co. and there was limited opportunity for him to be elsewhere. It may be possible that he removed briefly to NC around 1754 and returned shortly after Thomas' birth (I haven't yet mapped out all the county records of his whereabouts to see whether this was possible) -- he had relatives in NC (notably, his father's 1st cousin, Joseph b. c1692, settled in the Elizabeth City area (30 mi. east of Edenton) in the early 1700's and had at least 3 children around John's age; and hi! s Aunt Elizabeth on his father's side moved to New Hanover Co., NC -- but that was probably around 1760). I haven't yet sorted all this out -- it is of course possible that the Edenton birthplace was an error by an early (19th century) researcher that has proliferated, but I doubt that. Anything that you (or others) have that might shed some light on this topic would be greatly appreciated!
