(A lesson in patience I guess). For the past several years I've been researching the Pettyhohn line from James 1635 to my mother, Helen Ann Pettyjohn. I have fairly good information on everything except for the period from early 1700's to mid 1800's. I believe the line to run as follows: Jame PJ Sr b. abt 1687 Accomac Co VA James PJ Jr b.abt 1730 Sussex Co DE Ebenezer PJ Sr b. abt 1760 Sussex Co DE Ebenezer PJ Jr Sussex Co DE (this is a fuzzy one) Zachariah PJ b. 29 Nov 1828 Sussex Co DE Theodore Purnel PJ b. 26 Mar 1856 Warren Willard PJ b. 29 Jun 1885 Helen Ann PJ (my mother, still living) Any assistance you could provide in firming up the James Jr -> Zachariah connections would be greatly appreciated. I'd also be happy to trade source data. I have copies and/or transcriptions of a number of early probate and orphans court documents. Looking forward to hearing from you. 1. [DESUSSEX] George W. Bailey, sea captain??
    2. Darlene Corrigan
    3. I am looking for information about my great uncle George W. BAILEY ( b. circa 1865 - died between 1947-1953). In his sister Martha's 1947 obit he was listed as living in Georgetown, DE but he was not mentioned (and assumed deceased) in his sister Mary Elizabeth's obit in 1953. My question. . . A family member said that this George Bailey was thought to have been a sea captain. How would I find out if this was true and whether he was in the Navy or if he was a fisherman or something of that sort involved in private commerce? Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3Y.2ADI/1448 Message Board Post: Hi Kim, My 2nd ggrandmother, Susannah Stokely [bef. 1755-27 Aug 1836], and her two husbands, John DeCamp [c. 1750-c. April 1778] and Nehemiah Stokely [1753?-Dec1792], registered slaves in a census taken Nov. 10, 1780 as a result of "An Act for the gradual abolition of slavery," passed 1 March 1780, in PA. By this time, John DeCamp was dead, and Susannah had married Nehemiah. The slaves enumerated were: Male, 35, Syres; female, 40, Nan; female, 14, Melsey; male, 6 Prince; female, 4 Nance; famale 1 and 11 months, Pegg; female, 10 months, Frank. (From Albert's History of Westmoreland County, p. 447) Susannah still had a few slaves in 1806, when an itinerant preacher baptized one of them. There is also a black, "Freeman Stokely," in an early (1800 or 1810, I think) census in N. Huntington Twp., Westmoreland Co., PA, where Susannah and her husbands lived. (That area of Westmoreland Co., now called Waltz' Mills, PA, was originally Susannah's property; after 1835, it was in the newly erected Sewickley Twp.) Polly Finley, Susannah's daughter, had married into a literate family of Presbyterians with a history of teaching their slaves to read. Rev. James Bradley Finley's father, a 1st cousin of Polly's husband, John Finley, freed his literate slaves in Kentucky in 1795, giving them the option of joining the family in their move to Chillicothe, Ohio, or of remaining in Kentucky. About a dozen of them followed the family into Ohio, with only one or two remaining in Kentucky. (This is from James B. Finley's autobiography, published in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1853. You might be interested in his account of life in Kentucky, on the frontier.) I tried to find the census record for Freeman, but was unable to pull it up on the internet. I have a paper copy somewhere. Pat

There were three contemporary Brinkley JOHNSON's in Sussex County. All three fought in the War of 1812. By the 1830 census, my ancestor was in IL and the only Brinkley left in Sussex census was the one living in Indian River Hundred. I believe the father of this Brinkley JOHNSON was William. My ancestor came either from Nanticoke or Northwest Fork Hundred. The group of JOHNSON's who bought land in Randolph County, IL included William, Bartholomew, Brinkley, Henry and McKinsey. Do any of these names appear in your anyone's data? Does anyone have a marriage between a BRINKLEY and a JOHNSON in Sussex County or surrounding DE or MD?

    3. The only information I have is George Betts b. 1650 in Somerset Co., MD; m. 7 Nov 1669 in Somerset Co.MD to Bridget Bosman b. 1653, daughter of William Bosman of Somerset Co. and his wife Bridget. and these notes: In John Laws' will he mentions in addition to children and widow, "my brother, George Betts." (Annapolis MD Wills, Liber K p. 307; proved 6/30/1697). This actually refers to his brother-in-law, George Betts. Thomas Roe and Ann his wife deed to Anna Laws, daughter of John Laws, seven heifers. Her uncle George Betts to have charge of them. If she dies no issue then to brothers Robert and George Laws. This is just information I have gathered from various sources but have not verified. This is not my family. This is also pretty early info but maybe your George is descended from this one! The Laws family (or at least some of them) moved into Sussex Co., DE. Just thought I'd share this since I had it so easily available! There are a couple of paragraphs about the Betts family in a book I have but I'm not sure its the right family line. If you want it anyway I can type it in and send it. No names are listed in the album, but we are hoping that someone out there might have photos of perhaps Isaac's father Bartholomew M. Cannon 1846-1924 or of Anna (Noble) Cannon's father, Daniel James. Noble 1836-1923 (also Seaford area or neighboring counties. Bartholomew and Isaac moved their family from Delaware to Philadelphia circa 1895. They are my great grandfather and great great grandfather. Bartholomew is the son of John Cannon and Hester A. (Adams?) according to the 1850 census of Sussex. Bartholomew was married to Margaret A. Cannon (also a Cannon). Margaret's Parents were Ebenezer and Sarah Cannon per 1850 Sussex census. Bartholomew's siblings were George, James M. and Killester while Margaret's siblings were Isaac B., Elijah, and Joseph. Daniel Noble's children (Anna's Noble siblings) were Julie, George E., Garey L, Albert, Mary E., and Nora. Isaac and Anna Cannon's children were Edwin Noble Cannon(my line), Harold, and Albert. They lived on N. 56th street in Philly. Bartholomew died in 1924 and is now buried in Seaford. Any help is appreciated. I took digital pictures of the album before returning it to my uncle in New Hampshire. Tom Cannon Georgetown, KY
