I visited Hill Cemetery in Laurel last year to photograph Marvel graves and as I remember it can be entered by going down either 8th or 9th Street which are turns off of Rt. 24 --the main road through Laurel. The cemetery is large enough to have more than one entrance I would think. Maybe someone who has been there more often can give more details. But it definitely still exists and is still being used for new burials. Hope this helps, Nanette in NC
Ms.Petiss, I believe that there is a cemetery in the town of Laurel in Sussex Co., DE named Laurel Hill. Either Mike Hitch or Hubert Prettyman could probably confirm this. They are on this list and do research in the Laurel area. George Bacon
Could anyone point me in the direction of the area known as Cedar Creek back in 1691. I have an ancestor Thomas Wynne who had an estate near Lewistowne and Cedar Creek. I am very interested in finding the area of this property. It was supposed to be 200 acres. Also, if anyone has any suggestions on where I may look in records, please email me. Thanks Nancy

Hi List! 08-04-02 In reference to H. R. Callaway, b. c. 1819, Sussex County, Delaware. I wondered if this name could be Henry R. Callaway? As I have a Henry R. Callaway born to Wingate Callaway (b. c. 1769-1794, d. c. 1840-1841), of Sussex County, Delaware & Eunice (Ward) Hosea, (b. est. 1770-1803, d. est. 1819-1886). I have Wingate & Eunice Callaway's other children as: Levinia, Nancy, Elizabeth, Hetty, John W., William, Luther H. Callaway, b. c. 1825-1830. Henry R. Callaway's Father; Wingate Callaway, was born to: William Callaway, b. c. 1754, & d. 1793, in Sussex County, Delaware, & Wife of William was Sarah. Later after William's death in 1793, Sarah Callaway relocated from Sussex Co., DE. into Georgia, marring a William Giles. Both were known to each other in Sussex County, DE. and Sarah was believed to have taken her youngest son (William) with her when relocating into Georgia. Thus another line of Delaware / Georgia Callaway's. My Tree Maker puts H. R. Callaway as a 1st Cousin 5x removed, as William Callaway, (d. 1793) is my 5th G. Grandfather. Incidentally, for those interested in the Callaway / Calloway lines, the 27th annual Callaway Family Association "Gathering," will be held this October 10-13, 2002 at the Sheraton International Hotel, close to BWI Airport, 7032 Elm Road, Baltimore, Maryland. There is a 25.00 reg. fee. Upon request I can forward more particulars. In Callaway Memory, John J. Zoch, Sr. Broad Creek Hundred Seaford, Delaware E-mail: [email protected]

There were representatives of the Curry family in the area. However, I have not done any primary research on them. I would check for them in Caroline County, Maryland, and Kent County, Delaware, as well as Sussex County. There was a large migration from the area to Kentucky and Ohio about the time Elizabeth Nutter would have reached maturity. Often family and neighborhood groups traveled together. I think the Bagwells were from Kent County. The neighborhood borders the division line between Maryland and Delaware. Please keep in touch I would like to bring this line forward after the migration. Thanks.

The application states that she married Robert Nutter October, 1775, "a soldier from Sussex County, Delaware, who went into the army in 1777 and died of camp fever. She married March 15th, 1781 Thomas Nutter who died Oct. 18th, 1835. Betty Nutter born August 26th, 1776 is the child by the first husband." A bible record presented with the application states that Sarah Bagwell, daughter of John Bagwell and Elizabeth his wife was born June 1st, 1759 and married Thomas Nutter March 15, 1781. Children of the second marriage were Leah, Huet, Sally, David and William. I have nothing on Alexander Curry at this time. Thomas Nutter sold his land in Sussex County, DE, near the end of 1794. In March 1804, David and Thomas Nutter of Scott County, Kentucky, gave Power of Attorney to Robert Griffith! of Scott County, to sell slaves remaining in Delaware. It is recorded among the Sussex County, Delaware land records. Sarah Bagwell Nutter's sister, Elizabeth, married Tubman Cannon in Delaware. They migrated from Delaware to Shelby County, Kentucky. Elizabeth died in New Albany, Indiana, Mar 8, 1857 at aged 85.
