Hi John Sorry to be slow responding to your email but my computer has been down and I am currently trying to recreate my files. I have a number of James and Dolby marriages in my line. Have not found any Betts as yet but this is always a possibility. In addition to Dolby and James I have Messicks, Hudsons and Cannons in the same line. Do you have any of these in your line? What James or Dolbys are you looking for? The earliest Dolby that I have proven for my line is Isaac Dolby, Broad Creek Hnd, probated 1844. My later Dolby line was mostly in Nanticoke area. These Dolbys and James' are mostly buried at Asbury Chapel/Church on the Laurel Georgetown Hwy. Let me know if I can be of help to you. In this document submitted on August 11, 1830 he mentions his brother John who "is at this time sick and unable to join in this petition" and Robert and Cornelius T. Burton "are minors under the age of 21". He also names "Elizabeth McCray, late Elizabeth Burton, the widow of the said Samuel Burton and Henry Burton, David E. Burton and Samuel A. Burton the heirs and desinees of the said Samuel Burton, deceased". The land in question was located in Angola Neck. If you have ANY information about these people, would you kindly let me know? Thank you

3 George Messick b: September 05, 1733 in Somerset Co, MD d: 1781 in Sussex Co, DE .............................. +Patience Ingram Father: Jacob Ingram Mother: Charity // Ingram ...................................... * * * * The 1733 date for George Messick's birth is too late for the land transactions that take place and the various wills he's part of. Jacob Ingram will dated 7 August 1752 states he gives....."unto my daughter Patience Messick fifty acres of land lying at the North side of the tract of Land I now Live on and now in the tenure possession and Occupation of George Messick......" A little math will show that George is 18 when the will is drawn up. He could be married but it's highly unlikely he's going to be in tenure possession of 50 acres of land and be under 21. >From Land Records of Wicomico County, Maryland 1666-1810 by Ruth Dryden. p. 269. Land patented in 1741 by John Messick for 100 acres. 20 July 1771 George Messick of Sussex Co., DE son of John sold to George Farrington 50 acres. (Not son of Isaac. There are four different George Messicks in Sussex Co., DE.) According to the will of George Messick of 1781 he mentions his daughter Nancy Ratliff wife of William Ratliff. William Ratliff left a will in 1800 where he names his sons Charles and Samuel. Checking the 1790 census and the tax rolls there will be a Charles as head of a household which means he is 21 + and born before 1770. He is George Messick's GRANDSON and he's born when his grandfather is 37 at the most. Could happen but really pushing it. Samuel Ratliff appears on the 1786 tax list, along with his father William in the Levy Court Proceedings RG#4200. Roll #1.. If Samuel Ratliff is paying taxes in 1786 he can't be the grandson of George Messick who was born in 1733 because Samuel would have been born ca. 1765 and his grandfather would have been 32 at the time. This George Messick may have been named for the new King of Great Britain George I who came to power in 1714 in opposition to the Catholic pretender. The Messick family were Protestant and there was no male named George until after 1714. There was an uprising in Scotland in 1715 in favor of the Catholic Pretender. It's called "The '15" . Many protestants started using the name of George to show their support of the new Protestant king. Things changed after 1760 when George III became king.

I have found Woolman Donovan in the 1785 Tax Assessment List for Broadkill Hd., Sussex County. The name appears again, as Woolman and Woolman L[an]d Donovan, in the reconstructed 1790 census, the 1800 Census, and in the Georgetown Tax List of 1833. Obviously, Woolman was a given name used during this time period. My question is: could Woolman have been later written as William? Or are these two distinctly different names? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Joana S. Donovan
Hello. I am looking for any information about Levin HITCHENS and his wife, Martha ___?___. They were both from Sussex County according to their daughter's death certificate. I have no dates for either of them, but their daughter Sarah Levinia HITCHENS was born in 1841. (she was my g-grandmother) This family should be on the census' of that time. If anyone has access to the census' of that time, could they look for them? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you for any help you may be able to give. Darlene
Good morning lists, I'm posting this info because I think it is of great importance & interest to us in bordering states, who may be doing genealogy research in NJ. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) The New Jersey Dept. of Health (just since August 1) has relaxed the restrictions on getting some vital records again!! Check out the NJ Dept. of Health, Vital Records website: http://www.state.nj.us/health/vital/vital.htm. You can get a copy of their brand new application form there. You can get the application in an Adobe format or in a Word document. As of August 1 - births over 80 years old are considered "genealogical" and the application form states that "you need only supply the name of the individual recorded on the vital record, the county where the event occurred, and the year the event occurred." The same is true for Marriages over 50 years old and Deaths over 40 years old. The copies will be uncertified copies and will be stamped "For Informational Purposes Only." They also promise to do searches of multiple years again as long as the records fall into the "genealogical" category. This is a major improvement over the recent restrictions and should make life much simpler for us all. You do need to submit a photocopy of your photo ID with your application -- or "two approved non-photo IDs." Merrilee: Also, if you are local - Birth records through 1923 are available on microfilm at the NJ State Archives and you can look at them yourself for free. (Copies there are 50 cents.)
