Hello, I have posted some of this before but it has been quite some time so I am posting again in search of some new information. Looking for children born to Dora Elizabeth HITCHENS and Joseph W. COOPER married 4Sep1893, Wicomico Co, MD. I know of at least one childe and there is possibly another. Dora remarried 23Feb 1899 to George Thomas BRITTINGHAM First child of Dora and Joseph: Willey M. COOPER (possibly Wilhelamina ... M could have been May/Mae). In 1900 census Dora had stated she had given birth to 3 children and that 3 were still living children. However she only lists Willey and a new child with the new husband ... New child is Helen L. BRITTINGHAM. Cant account for 3rd child. Would almost have to have been a child with Joseph W COOPER. This second child wouldnt have been older than 5 years old in 1900 or younger than 2 years, is my guess since Dora was remarried by 1899 and if this child is still living in 1900, and not living with Dora and George BRITTINGHAM, then where would it be. Was Joseph still living? Was child with him if he was still living? Was child with Grandparents on day of census, or living permantly with Grandparents? Also looking to see if Dora and Joseph were divorced, or was she widowed and when. Would there be a record of the parents and siblings of Joseph on anything such as marriage license, death certificate regardless of date of death (leaving her a widow or even if death ocurred in later years.) They seemed to have lived in and around Delmar sometimes in Maryland and sometimes in Delaware. Sometimes Sussex CountyDE and sometimes in Wicomico County, MD. Their families (BRITTINGHAM, COOPERS, HITCHENS, and Dora's maternal side the SHUMANS) all seem to be from in and around those areas. In the 1900's Dora and George lived in Wilmington Delaware (New Castle County). Dora died there in 21Jan1924 but was transported by train to Delmar for burial. Im not sure if it was Delaware or Maryland and I do not know where the burial took place, burial was 24Jan1924. By here death, Dora and George had 3 more children. Mary Virginia, John Washington and James L BRITTINGHAM (this last child was born in 1915) Hoping to find information on Dora's other child, as well as information in Joseph's family. Thanks. I just sent something into the ether without a subj. or message - Sorry -Return Key is vicious sometimes. I I was about to 'paste' the following to reiterate my hypothesis re early HASTINGS families as Quakers, though they may have married into other denominations later, and the ones I know good Christians, whether Presb., Bapt. etc. who denounced slavery.- (almost exclusively with Old Testament given names) must have derived from the lines in PA. Wm. Penn formed DE from the Lower Three Counties of PA in 1682. Pulled from 'Google' - "Penn realized that much of the land towhich he had been given a royal charter was held by the Delaware (LeniLenape) Indians. Although the document has not survived, it is believed thatin 1682 Penn signed a treaty with the natives who occupied the land payingthem a fair value for its use by settlers." Voltaire wrote, "It was the only treaty made by the settlers with the Indians that was never sworn to, and the only one that was never broken." To strengthen my idea, I have not found that my immediate line in DE (James HASTINGS m. Alafare BENNETT ca 1800) held any slaves. Does anyone in touch with the Quaker communities in eastern OH - Mt. Pleasant? Barnesville? - have record of any of them migrating from Delaware or Maryland + or - 1800?
