    1. [DESUSSEX] John White from DE, Civil War soldier
    2. Adina Watkins Dyer
    3. Anyone trying to find a John White who fought in the Civil War from Delaware? I was taking tombstone photos yesterday at the Indiana State Soldiers' Home Cemetery and came across one for Jno. White, Co. F, 4th Del. Inf. That's all the information that is on the tombstone - no dates. That's all I know. However, if you think this could have been someone you are looking for, the applications for admission to the home are located at the Indiana State Archives. http://www.in.gov/icpr/archives/family/fam.html#MS Will gladly send the photo to you by email if you think he was part of your family. 1. [DESUSSEX] FISHERs; JOSEPHs; Indians
    2. Leo Filon III
    3. Greetings! I am Leo Joseph O'Filon III ("legally" just Filon without the O). My mother is Claire Agnes McCoog Filon, born 1937 in Philadelphia. Her parents were Clarence McCoog and Alice Dollard, born in Phila. Clarence's parents were Thomas McCoog, born 1885 in Penna.'s Anthracite Coal Region; and LULA (or LULU) FISHER, born 1888 or '89, and hailed from a Delaware community she only remembered as "Dog," which may be Dagsboro, Sussex County. (Or Dog's Ear Corner --> Roxana, Sus.Co.?) Although on the PA Marriage Cert. birthplace listed as Kent Co., Delaware. Lula and Thomas met in Phila. where both had moved for work, and married in 1906. Lula died in the mid-to-late 1960s in Maple Shade, NJ, where they had a farm(!). She was one of 13 children including "Pete," Clara, Anne, and possibly Charles. Lula's parents were MIRANDA (or MARANDA?) JOSEPH (info unknown) and a man whose last name was FISHER, who Lula said was "a Welsh fisherman," but may have been born in Delaware. They farmed in "Dog," DE. Mr. FISHER had relatives in Lewes or Rehoboth, DE, and Glen Burnie (incl. a Marguerite Fisher) and Chestertown, MD. MIRANDA died in the 1930s, location uncertain: maybe "Dog," maybe elsewhere. Miranda's parents were "an Indian" woman, according to Lula, and-- obviously--a man surnamed JOSEPH of unspecified background but presumably(??!!) *not* "an Indian"(??) No info. Do any of you know any of these folks or their relatives?? or have any questions?? Thanks. _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

    3. Hi David, This is what I found, Sussex County Delaware Orphans Court Records Lib. N fol. 143 & 144 Levi Hasting (no "s"), minor, petition to choose a guardian Levi Hasting, minor son of Daniel Hasting, late of Little Creek Hundred...sheweth that your petitioner is a minor above the age of 14, to wit 19 years and 10 months, and is entitled to landed property worth about $50 per annum and personal property worth about $50...chooses Elihu Hasting as his guardian. Signed Levi Hasting 4 March 1824, Elihu Hasting appointed guardian, with Michael Hasting, security, bond for $2,000 Lib. N fol 144 Benjamin Hasting, minor, petition to choose a guardian This is identical to Levi's petition except that Benjamin is aged 17 years and 10 months. Signed Benjamin Hasting 4 March 1824, Elihu Hasting appointed guardian, with Michael Hasting, security, bond for $2,000 Lib. N fol. 184-185 The valuation of their land doesn't give any new information. It was valued on 7 April 1824 by Henry Bacon, Jonathan Waller and William Elzey, and was recorded on 29 July 1824. I see from my Sussex County Will Index 1800-1851 that Daniel Hasting left a will (Lib. G. fol. 259) which was dated 11 July 1822 and probated 16 July 1822. Let me know if you want me to look it up. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3Y.2ADI/1475.1 Message Board Post: In general, Orphans Court had jurisdiction over minor children and their property. It also had jurisdiction over real property divisions among heirs regardless of age. The **abstract** of **valuations** you copied from the internet puts the names of the minor heirs of the decedent in parentheses. This is not at all the way the original Orphans Court records look, and it is in no way the complete Orphans Court record; what you copied is by folks who were interested in use of forest woods, so there's lots of mentions of fences in the extracts. You must look at the original record to determine whether the two children named are children of the decedent or are children of a deceased child or sibling. As an example of how incomplete this item is, there should have been a petition for division of lands and partition among all the heirs, and there might have been a partition setting off a widow's 'thirds'.

    1. [DESUSSEX] Census Index Corrections
    2. Jim Craig
    3. Is there an address for correcting Index errors. By sheer luck, I found my father's family on the 1920 Census Index, because the last name had been mis-spelled. The name in the index was Creig instead of Craig. I happened to find it by sheer luck, looking down during my research for my Mitchell ancestors, and just happening to notice William S, Creig and family directly below the Mitchell(s) I was looking at. The address is correct on Vickers Ave in Lewes, and being 1920, it lists my grandfather, grandmother, and three aunts, Bessie, Ada, and Elizabeth. Is there any way of updating the Index, or is it to be left forever incorrect?

Aaron Hastings born April 12, 1757 and wife Polly (who may also be a Hastings) July 22, 1768. Though their births and deaths are recorded in the WHH Bible, no explanation is given for why. I am looking for the parents of Nutter Hastings who married Priscilla Callaway. He was born abt 1817 in Delaware. She I believe to be the daughter of Levin and Frances Callaway of Delaware. Nutter Hastings, who may have had a first name other than Nutter, lives next door to Henry Bacon (age 64/69, and wife Mary Hearne) in 1850, Little Creek Hundred. In 1820, a Solomon Hastings age 26 to 45 lives next door to Henry Bacon in Little Creek Hundred. Solomon has 1 male under 10 and a female and a female age 16-26 in his household. Can anyone add to the clues here?

Again according to the death certificate she is a widow and lists her last name as Selmes which must mean that Russell Selmes was her last husband. I have reasons to believe she was also married to a Mr. Orem but have nothing to prove it except that a Charles Orem was included as a decendent in the administration of her estate which was handled by my father. With this information I started searching the census and I found what I believe to be her family. 1880 US Federal Census Broad Creek, Sussex County, Delaware Calaway, John       W M 26       M   Laborer     MD MD MD Calaway, Margaret J. February 12, 1916 Cambridge Maryland d. March 1987 Maryland. This is basically all I know for sure. I then started searching the census for the paternal family of my grandmother. One census lists her place of birth as Maryland the other Delaware. When I found the found the family of Jonathan and Sarah with a John age 6 in the 1860 Maryland Census I thought I had found it..and you know the rest. If you can help me in any way I would be most greatful. Thanks for all your help now and in the future.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3Y.2ADI/1420.2.2 Message Board Post: I have a Heavelo Lofland and wife Eunice who have a son Wm. Draper Lofland. Heavelo is s/o Littleton Lofland (d.1799) and wife Grace. Littleton is brother to my George Lofland who was husband to Elizabeth Hill, dt/o Robert. Littleton and George had a sister Nancy(Nanny) who m. John Riley. If you have access to Sussex county marriages could you look and see if George and Elizabeth's son William is listed? He was b. ca 1778 and probably married 1800-1810. Again thanks for sending the Rob't Hill info. Carolyn
