    3. Dear Listers, Just received notice that Maryland State Archives has "temporarily suspended research related to birth and death records..." Unless it is for legal purposes or official business there "diminishing staff and budget shortfalls compels them to look for ways to provide the service. And the letter I received goes on to say that the reduced staff will be focusing on providing vital records indexes in a searchable, web-based environment. Has anyone heard how long before there may be a web site for MD birth and deaths? It does not help that there were millions of them, all named things like George or John or William. Sorry. My George Americus Vincent did go ti North Carolina, but none of the others as far as I know. It also does not help that state and county lines moved around, so people weren't quite certain where they were even born.

My hunch is that they came form Maryland/Delaware/Virginia/NC. I am having a problem tracing them backwards. (I see our names are similar) My ggrandfather was James Vincent. My grandfather was John Fletcher Vincent (1875-1920) and my father was John Fletcher Vincent, Jr. (1917-1984) my brother is John Fletcher Vincent, III (1949-) On the death certificate of JFV (1875-1920) the parents are listed as Abella Mason and James Vincent. On the marriage certificate for JFV and Virginia Belle Rainey on October 10, 1900, both parents of JFV were listed as deceased and the parents names were James Vincent and S. Vincent. I can't find any links to James or Abella or S. Vincent, although I have one census (1880 that helps). JFV was called Fletcher by many people and he is listed on a census with a S Vincent in 1880 (age 5) in Northampton County, NC. My Vincents lived in Northampton County, NC, Greensville County, VA., perhaps Dinwiddie County, Va and Halifax County, NC. JFV and Virginia Rainey are buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Northampton County, NC. If you have any links, please email me. Bev

    1. [DESUSSEX] "B.C.H." in tax-list entries?
    2. Frank O'Donnell
    3. I've been sifting through Sussex County tax lists for the early 19th century. Around 1830, I see several entries on the main tax rate list with the initials "B.C.H." after the person's name. For example, in Little Creek Hundred: Joseph Betts B.C.H. 250 Manam Bull B.C.H. 75 I'm taking a wild guess and speculating that these were people who lived in Broad Creek Hundred (B.C.H.) who owned property in Little Creek Hd? Any other possible interpretation anyone would like to advance? Thanks for any thoughts.

    1. [DESUSSEX] Re: DESUSSEX-D Digest V03 #21
    2. Hi, I know that is true too, but and this is a large exception. There are also alot of Quakers that came north from Virginia and later from Maryland. Henry White's descendants from one of the first Quaker meetings in Virginia came to the eastern shore of Virginia and then into Maryland's Eastern Shore and then on to Delaware of course my ancestor Reverend Henry joined the Methodist Church by then and headed north to be a circuit rider out of Philadelphia into the counties of Delaware according to a write up on Churches of Delaware. Ed Wright at his seminar said he was working on a new book with more information on Quakers meetings in the northern counties of Maryland and in Delaware. Thanks Becky

    3. Why not try the folks at the Quaker Info Center in Philadelphia: http://www.quakerinfo.org/ I believe most Delaware Quakers have historically been associated with the Wilmington area, northern DE, New Castle County, but I believe there was a Meeting (church) or two farther south. There were some old, old Meetings along the MD Eastern Shore, too: one Meetinghouse there is a National Historic Site. It might not be difficult to find a list of names of early Phila. Quaker settlers and see if there are any Hastings' on it. I do know that their descendants are now scattered all over North America - a few years ago I met one from California. BTW, I speak as a Quaker Studies scholar, for what it's worth! :) Good luck, Leo Peter O'Filon. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3Y.2ADI/1503 Message Board Post: Ken, I have quite a lot on the descendents of old Joshua Morgan, his two sons, and the Bradbury family, (Elizabeth, Joshua's wife. I have made charts with all the data that I havve compiled over the years. I am almost sure that my Joseph Morgan who went to what is W. Va. now (Marion Co.) and his wife, Rachel Griffith, is a descendent of the son Joseph and not Evan Bradbury. I have constructed a family for Evan Bradbury and my family does not fit in with his - I am reasonably sure. I moved from my large two story home in May due to y crippled knees, one a result of dislocating it in the University and the other one in Switzerland. My gen. material is still in packing boxes in a walkin closet and I haven't been able to unpack due to a complete knee replacement in late July. I am facing another one but hope to get my data unpacked by someone else. Your name ringsa bell somehow - do you live in Alaska? Let me hear from you. Betty J. Hamner, San Antonio, Texas
