In 1830, Robert and James are just a few houses apart. A Joshua Hopkins is living between them at a perfect age for a father. They are believed to be the three brothers who "built a boat and sailed from Wales" and are the earliest generation we can definitely pin down. There is nothing known about George, but Robert did marry and have two sons, Nehemiah and Washington. Our ancestor, James, married Mary Coomb, and had three daughters and one son: (1) Priscilla, (2) Martha, (3) Elizabeth, and (4) Alexander Washington. I descend from Alexander Washington Hopkins. I am skeptical of the family story and believe if it did happen it was some generation(s) before James' and Robert's. Stacey Jefferson Austin, Texas [email protected]

Took a look through my Hazzard materials and I think I have found your line; Working back: 1. Sussex Co, DE Orphan Court, Book S, pg 294. 26 Sep 1840. James A. Hazzard died intestate 1830, survived by 4 brothers and 1 sister: William F, who is deceased and leaves a widow Mary plus issue Samuel, John E, and Francis Rhodes Hillard W. Henry O. Hessy L. who is married to John Walker. 2. Sussex Co, DE Orphan Ct, Book H, pg 170. 20 Jul 1824. John Hazzard died 14 Feb 1823, leaving 6 children: William F., Rhoades, Hessy Lewes Hazzard, Henry Osburn Hazzard, James A. Hazzard. (Notice that this is only 5 children - in the same handwriting the word West has been added to the list. As 5 of the children match the list in #1 above, Hillard W. must have been Hillard West Hazzard. 3. Bible of Mr. Thomas Hazzard and his sister Penelope Hazzard of Lewes DE, publ and printed by M Carey and son, Chestnut St Philadelphia, 1821. (Excerpts) David Hazzard, son of Cord and Rachel Hazzard, was born May ye 13, 1749 Elon McIlvaine, daughter of Andrew and Edxy McIlvain, was boy Sept 21st A.D. 1746. John Hazzard, son of David and Elon Hazzard was born January ye 28th A.D. 1780. John Hazzard, son of David and Elon Hazzard died the 20th of Feb 1823. [Note that this date differs by 7 days the one given in the Orphan Court record, but I could not find a record of any other John that came close to this date.] If this is correct your line is Hillard West Hazzard, born 1813, son of John Hazzard, (1780-1823), son of David Hazzard, (1749-1790) , and Elon McIlvaine, David was the son of Cord Hazzard, (1695-1700-1771) and Rachel Brereton (some accounts say Burton) , Cord was the son of David Hazzard, (1670-c1748) and Anne Cord. Found nothing on the wife of John Hazzard, but there appear to be clues in his list of children. West, Hilliard, Ozburn/Osburn and Rhodes are all Sussex County surnames. Hessy is a given name in the West family.

Sorry, should not be trying to type this late! I transposed the numbers. William Hazzard, son of Edward and Anne, was born c1671 as he first appears on a tax list about 1692.
Do you have some dates? I have a Cord Hazzard (born c1695-1700 in MD-d a1771 Sussex, Co, DE) who married Rachel Brereton. Cord was the son of David Hazzard, born 8 Jul 1670, Manokin, MD, and his wife Anne Cord, born 1677 Somerset Co, MD. This David was the son of Edward Hassard/Hazzard and Anne Carr, an indentured servant of Randall Revell. Edward Hazzard was in Accomac Co, VA by 1662 when he applied for a Headright. He and Ann had several children whose names appear in the court records. Edward finally married Anne 1 May 1671/2 in Somerset Co, MD. He then announced that he was leaving for England in May of 1674. He may have died by 7 Apr 1675 when Major John West received 100 acres, hogs etc 'from the estate of Edward Hassard" to pay debts. My line is through William Hazzard (born c 1761) , another son of Edward and Anne. I have lots more on this line, including the children of Cord if you are interested.
