Two of my long-ago Knowles uncles, Jacob (b. 1817) and his brother Isaac H. (born 1828), are buried there. It appears that the latest death year on a tombstone there is 1906, the earliest 1839. I have reason to believe that this family burial grounds MAY be somewhere in the vicinity of Gum Branch Rd., though I never was able to personally find it thereabouts. That burial grounds was only listed in the Hudson tombstones collection (not ALSO in Tatnall), which suggests to me that it's perhaps in a remote sort of location, that not everyone would have been familiar with and able to easily spot. (All "obvious" cemeteries were listed in both the Hudson AND Tatnall tombstone collections.) Any location information that anyone may have, I will be grateful to learn. Please feel free to e-mail me directly at Genplant29@aol.com , putting "Knowles Family cemetery location" in the Subject line of your message. Thanks. Author: frostfreedet Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.delaware.counties.sussex/3189.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: It should be an easy matter with the information from the booklet to trace ownership of the home backward from the 1986 purchasers. The statement as to when the home was built may or may not be correct, but it seems unlikely that a distinct building was erected to be a Post Office 'in' Woodland, with Seaford but 6 miles away. There may have been a limited-servace postal substation, selling stamps and taking mail for sending. Such offices were often in a home (or attached lean-to) or the corner of a local store. If a Post Office named 'Woodland' existed, one has to be careful mentally to distinguish between the PO name and a place name. The US PO officials in Washington DC determined what the name of the PO would be, and each had to be unique. The first Postal Person in a given specific locale could suggest a name, but their choice was advisory only. This can create local confusion and map-makers' confusion about differentiating between PO name and village or other site name. The 1930 US Census, by the way, shows two adult William Knowles' in Sussex Co., William A. and William S., both farmers. Willard Knowles was enumerated as a Truck Farmer. Another approach to the location would be to look at the 1930 Census page-by-page for the Woodland-Seaford-ferry area, to see whether anyone had a Postal occupation. Then one could see if this person owned property in the right area for it to have actually served as the site of the PO or substation at that time. It is well also to remember that Postal appointments were political patronage, and tended to change with Presidencies. There may have been a brand new postal person with the election of FDR. That is officially documented fact. Despite an extensive careful search throughout the Bethel-Woodland-Seaford-Blades-Concord area for the tombstone of any Knowles male, particularly a William, who died in or about 1947, none could be found, thus adding to the likelihood that the Woodland Post Office story is, indeed, about my ancestor Willard. Author: DavidWilsonUSPL Surnames: Knowles Hastings Angell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.delaware.counties.sussex/3189/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Seeking the location of the former Woodland, Sussex Co., DE Post Office building. The following passage was published in 1994 in a booklet titled "Recipes and Remembrances of Woodland" by the Woodland Ferry Association. I am quite certain that the Will Knowles referred to in it was my great-grandfather, Willard Saulsbury Knowles. Can anyone tell me precisely where the former Woodland Post Office - now a residence - is located? Does anyone know of historic, or even more recent, photos of it existing? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. I know generally where my ancestor Willard lived, though his specific residence was never pointed out to me. Here's the book description: "The Woodland Post Office was constructed in the mid 1800's as a one-story one-room house. Trees, forming the floor joists, run the width of this old house. Seemingly, several families 'set up housekeeping' here in what was once known as the Johnson home. A second story was added on in 1947, and while working on this addition, Mr. Will Knowles stepped on a rusty nail, developed lockjaw, and died a painful death. In 1986, this home was purchased...by Ken and Donna Hastings Angell...." I believe the 1947 reference in the above excerpt to be in error, and that the correct year was 1936. My research hasn't progressed far enough for me to know if there is a CT connection or not, but I will keep it in mind. Thanks.
