I am currently working on the ancestors of all of the wives of my Girard dit Girardin clan,Marie-Anne Gagné being the current one. There appears to be a few generations with Philippes, but I will straighten them out later. You are correct about the dit names being used to tell folks apart. The tradition started with the soldiers of the Carrignan-Salières regiment. Many had similar last names so nicknames reflecting appearance or landmarks or simply what part of France they originated from took hold. Also some of the Habitants came to own property and became Sieurs. They then would tack on the name of their newly-named seigneurie. Needless to say, the tradition was later embraced by families with numerous brothers. My guess is that Philippe hailed from the Picardie region of France hence the dit Picard. I'll see what I can unearth on the subject. Thank you for looking into my queries and definitely no rush! Cheers!
