    1. [Desjardins] Seeking DESJARDINS in MI, ON and Quebec
    2. annestef
    3. I'm hoping to get some leads on my DESJARDINS line: I am looking for the parents and birthplace of a DESJARDINS ancestor, my g-g-grandfather Joseph who was born abt 1834-35 in Canada. The oral history of a deceased cousin is that our DESJARDINS line (evidently native or Metis) was living on tribal reserved land in Michigan, I think in the early 1800's. The younger tribe members were separated from their elders, and eventually (I have no idea how long after) my gg-gfa. Joseph moved to Old Town and Caribou in Maine. Some of his female cousins are known to have moved to Cambridge (Boston), Mass., and to someplace in Louisiana, but these latter moves might have taken place in the mid-to-late 1800's. Joseph himself turns up suddenly in Old Town/Bangor, Maine, as if out of nowhere, to marry Pauline HUDON dit BEAULIEU in 1857 in Bangor, ME. I have researched Maine, Quebec, and New Brunswick for Joseph's birth family and place, to no avail for almost three years. In three Maine censuses his birthplace was given as "French Canada" which professional researchers tell me can only mean Quebec. I turned up lots of records in Maine for him and his family, buy NONE give his town or county of birth, and NONE give his parents' names. I only know his approximate age and country of birth from U.S. Federal Census records for the state of Maine. Based on the oral history above which came to me a few months ago by videotape, I have begun to research French-Indian Metis families in Michigan and Ontario, figuring that after Joseph's birth in Quebec, the family had to migrate through Ontario to get to MI. Also, there are a number of DESJARDINS families who settled in both those places, as you most likely already know, many of whom intermarried with native Indians. Please let me know if any of this rings a bell with any of you. Or if not, please let me know which DESJARDINS you do have records for. Some related names for my line are DIONNE, HUDON dit BEAULIEU, LEVEQUE, SIROIS, MICHAUD, BOUCHER, BELANGER, COTE, and SOUCY.

    1. [Desjardins] Roll Call - DESJARDINS in MI, ON and Quebec

    3. Hi, list, I just posted the following information less than a week ago, but am re-posting this update for the roll call. Also I'm interested in more information on Donna Carmichael's Romeo DESJARDINS from Aroostook Co., Maine. Although he was born much later than my gg-gfa. Joseph, maybe there's some connection between them. There were other DESJARDINS's in both Aroostook and Penobscot Cos. in ME, with whom I have been unable to connect, but feel must have had some relationship to my ancestor. This is what I have so far: I am looking for the parents and birthplace of a DESJARDINS ancestor, my g-g-grandfather Joseph who was born abt 1834-35 in Canada. The oral history of a deceased cousin is that our DESJARDINS line (evidently native or Metis) was living on tribal reserved land in Michigan, I think in the early 1800's. Joseph himself turns up suddenly in Old Town/Bangor, Maine, as if out of nowhere, to marry Pauline HUDON dit BEAULIEU in 1857 in Bangor, ME. Interestingly, I have been able to trace one of Pauline's lines back to Antoine ROY dit DESJARDINS and his father Olivier, etc. (If anyone wants her ascendancy in this line, I'll be glad to post it.) I believe that Joseph was a descendant of Antoine and Olivier, too, since his records show the use of both ROY and the dit name DESJARDINS, but not having been able to trace it back far enough, am not absolutely sure yet. I have researched Maine, Quebec, and New Brunswick for Joseph's birth family and place, to no avail for almost three years. In three Maine censuses his birthplace was given as "French Canada" which professional researchers tell me can only mean Quebec. I turned up lots of records in Maine for him and his family, but NONE give his town or county of birth, and NONE give his parents' names. 3. One of the lines I'm blocked on is my gg-grandfather's DESJARDINS line. I'm particularly seeking his parents, siblings, and birthplace. The following is what I have on him: My gg-grandfather was Joseph ROY dit DESJARDINS/GARDNER (parents unknown) who was born abt 1834-35 in French Canada, known to be Quebec. The oral history of a deceased cousin is that our DESJARDINS line (evidently native or Metis) was living on tribal reserved land in Michigan, I think in the early-to-mid 1800's, when the tribe was driven off to other reserved lands. Unfortunately, this cousin could no longer remember the details when interviewed as an elderly person. Joseph shows up in Bangor, Maine at the time of his marriage in July 1857 to Pauline HUDON dit BEAULIEU/BOLIER, (b. July 1839, Cacouna, Quebec, d/o Jean Bte./Emilie DIONNE). The entire BEAULIEU family emigrated to Old Town, ME in 1854. After their marriage, the DESJARDINS-GARDNERS lived in Old Town, except 1876-1881, when they lived in KR2 Plantation, later called N. Caribou/Connor, ME. I have Pauline's line back to France, and have found that she is a ROY-DESJARDINS descendant, too: Pierre ROY dit DESJARDINS and M. Anne BOUCHARD Ignace ROY dit DESJARDINS and M. Rose LEBEL M. Rose DESJARDINS and Joseph CHAMBERLAND Rosalie CHAMBERLAND and Francois DIONNE Emilie DIONNE and Jean Bte. BEAULIEU Pauline BEAULIEU/BOLIER and Joseph DESJARDINS/GARDNER The DESJARDINS-GARDNER children (all born and married in Maine) were: > * Jos.Theodule/Odule,b.1858, m.Philomene DIONNE, 1881 Van > Buren,Aroostook Co. > * Lea/Ella, b.1859-60, m. Edouard MICHAUD, 1878, Van Buren > * Genevieve, b.1861, m. Eloi THERIAULT, 1879 Van Buren > * Victoria, b.1863, m. Xavier COTE, 1883, Waterville, Kennebec Co. > * Mary, b.1865, m. Agnes GAGNE/DUPLESSIS > * Henri/Henry, b.1871, m. Clara LEPAGE, 1892 Augusta > * Fred, b.1876, never married?, d. bef. 1917 > * Edouard/Edward, b.1878, m1.Adeline/Addie CYR, 1903, Old Town, > Penobscot Co.; m2. Lena CUNNINGHAM, 1921, Old Town > * Adeline/Celina, b.1882, m1. Onesime LANDRY, 1904, Old Town; > m2. Napoleon LOUBIER. Some related names are DIONNE, HUDON dit BEAULIEU/BOLIER, LEVESQUE/LEVEQUE, SIROIS, MICHAUD, BOUCHER, BEAUPRE, BELANGER, COTE, and SOUCY. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Anne Beaupre Stefaniak
