Many thanks to Mike, Marjorie, Mavis and cousins, Kathy and Jeff, for their helpful replies. Both of these terms refer to kinds of baskets, which would have been used to carry animal fodder etc. From A Glossary of Household, Farming and Trade Terms from Probate Inventories, by Rosemary Milward:- 'Wiskett - westket- wisket; a straw basket in which provender was taken to cattle. It had no handle but a hole at each end for the hands. Skuttle: (1) basket for sifting or winnowing corn; (2) large shovel to cast grain in winnowing; (3)large open basket, usually of wicker-work, used for carrying corn, vegetables, earth etc.' I'm reminded that in Scottish Gaelic, there are at least twenty different words meaning 'tether.' So although 'basket' would be sufficient for present-day usage, it was clearly important, in the past, to be more specific! I'm really grateful to all of you who replied. Kind regards Joy
