Hello Joy A Wisket was a basket - in use in lead mines I seem to remember. When young (what a long time ago!) we had a coal scuttle. I wonder whether they made basket weave ones? best wishes Marjorie Ward Derbyshire, UK Sources for Disley; Lyme Handley; Taxal & Whaley www.disley.net Sources for Hollingworths www.hollingworths.net Sources for NWDby incl Chapel; Charlesworth; Chinley; Fernilee; Glossop; Hayfield; Hope Valley; Mellor & New Mills http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dusk John Ward Paintings: www.johnward-art.com
Nuttall's Dictionary (1926) gives Wisket as 'basket' . Maybe used for logs and kindling as opposed to coal? >________________________________ > From: Marjorie Ward <marjorie.ward2@btinternet.com> >To: derbysgen@rootsweb.com >Sent: Saturday, 24 November 2012, 12:53 >Subject: Re: [DBY] Wiskets and Skuttles > >Hello Joy > >A Wisket was a basket - in use in lead mines I seem to remember. Thanks for this, Mavis. It certainly seems to be the answer. Thanks, Marjorie. It seems incredible that baskets were hard-wearing enough to use in mines.
