    3.  Found this   would  horses and bullocks be used, sounds a lot to me  18 Oct. 1696 Contents: Verdict of jury on Henry Kitchen of Bolsover, who died following the overturning of a wagon in which he was riding, drawn by 3 pairs of horses and 4 young bullocks on the side of Castle Hill near Bolsover. Deodands, wagon, horses and bullocks, worth £10.

Think the answer is partly in the site of the accident. My wife's family had a timber haulage business in the 19th century in Essex, and they used horses to pull wagons loaded with tree trunks.     3. Hi Mike Horses and Bullocks were used to pull heavy loads. I presume from time to time enough horses were not available. I have a photo of a farming relative where a cart was being pulled by a horse and bullock, not side by side but the bullock in front of the horse. The photo was taken in Derbyshire in the middle of the 20th century.
