    3. Barbara Blackburns were Pork Butchers on Crown Square at Matlock Their pork sausages and hazlet were fantastic. I remember going every week on my Rudge bicycle for these items (plus red-skinned polony and black pudding for father) When they left (in the 1950s I think) we hoped they would pass on the recipe for the sausages to the butcher who took over from them. The new butcher told us that they did not do this as the recipe was a family secret and so would not pass it on; it would die with them Since then I have tried to find a comparable sausage and (although it took many years) found that Old English sausage from Crich Butchers is a good match. Rumour has it that is the reason I married a Crich lass! Peter On 19 Dec 2012, at 08:30, Barbara Johnston wrote: > I am searching for info on a great uncle who had butcher's shop or shops in Matlock. The rest of the family stayed in Yorkshire except for Walter his youngest brother who came to work with Lewis and only died a few years back. I understand there was a van but don't know exactly when he opened his shops or who he worked for beforehand. He was an apprentice in the 1911 in Thurnscoe, Yorkshire. > > Hoping somebody can help even with a scrap of info. > > Thank you > Barbara Johnston > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to DERBYSGEN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. That is the kind of background I was looking for Peter, thank you very much. Must be where my dad inherited his love of sausages! Though surprised that you think they left in the 1950s. I thought great uncle Walter was still in butchering business when I was a child in the late 60s but I suppose he could have worked for whoever Lewis sold his shop to? Further digging needed, is there still a butcher's shop in the same place, do you know?
