Sorry to add to what I have just written - I have just found out how to see who else was in the household and the "Anna" is 9 years older that Matthew and my Hannah was only 6 years older - so possibly not the right one unfortunately. Strange how we can't see a death for him, Maureen. I did look at the army records but nothing concrete there. Think you will have to get the death record for any clues. Have you Eunice's birth certificate too as it will give us her father's profession at least. These brick walls are so difficult, aren't they, but all the more satisfying if you can break them down! Barbara I have been going by what was on the census returns as to their occupations. I have now delved into the hard copies I have of BMD certificates that I have rooted out. Not looked at them in a very long time. Makes a bit more sense now. But still adds a few more questions!! On Eunice's birth certificate it states the father as Matthew COPE (naval engineer) So looks like he was in the navy some time after he qualified as an engineer and possibly away a lot of the time. He was an iron smith in 1853 as stated on his marriage certificate and living on Nottingham Road in Derby. Then on Eunice's death certificate the father is stated at John COPE (a sailor merchant service - deceased) The saga carries on after that with Eunice who was an unmarried mother. She gave birth to my Grandfather George Russell COPE in 1883. I have been looking at the RUSSELL surname for a while now thinking that there might be a clue there as to the father. The RUSSELL family came in from Mancetter and settled in Derby. The had a few sons one of which ended up living in Drewery Lane (as was Eunice!) But by this time he was married. I did ask a few weeks back if anyone could help re where to go next looking for the father when some kind soul (Nivard) told me that she had had another son Ernest Russell COPE in 1886 and he had only lived a couple of months. So surely the same father. She died a spinster. Anyway that is another story. Aah that makes more sense. Have had a look for his navy record but can't find anything Maureen.
