Dear All, I am really struggling to confirm the Date of Birth for my 3x Great Grandfather William BROOKS. He was born at Middleton-by-Wirksworth, Derbyshire. His age at death (1865) was given as 66, which would possibly suggest a birth in 1799. The 1851 & 1861 Census would also seem to suggest the birth year as 1799. I cannot find a relevant Baptism at Wirksworth for that date. I accept that he could have been baptised later. The Wirksworth PRs do have a William BROOKS being baptised in 1802 to parents William and Hannah. Part of the problem is that BROOKS was not an uncommon name in Middleton/Wirksworth, so being precise with this William BROOKS & also his own parents and grandparents is not proving to be at all easy. Researchers on Ancestry mostly seem to have opted for the William BROOKS who was baptised in 1802, giving 1802 as his year of birth (not 1799). My 3x Great Grandfather married Ann MATHER (born 1797) 20th Jan 1820. I just wondered whether anyone who might be researching the BROOKS name can throw any light on the earlier DOB and parental queries. Yours hopefully, Alan
Hi Alan - I've looked through my Brooks tree and I don't have a William who matches your dates. As you say, Brooks is such a common name in the Wirksworth area!
