    3. Good afternoon I am rather unhappy with the WW1 record I have for Robert Pierpoint. A family member has provided a photo of him in the uniform of the Sherwood Foresters. Photos in the Derbyshire Courier dated 2 & 5 June 1917 show Lce Cpl R Pierpoint Crich, wounded (hatless and no regiment clue). The photo matches the Sherwood photo I have Two possible Robert Pierpoints in the Medal Roll Gunner RGA 79731 - he was from Sandbach aged 25 on enlistment so I have discounted this record Private MGC 53340 awarded SWB (enlisted 24/10/14 discharged 26/9/17 aged 21y 6 mo). He was only awarded V and BWM not the 14 or 15 Star so if he enrolled Oct 1914 did not serve overseas until 1916 As “my" Robert was reported wounded June 1917 I suppose he could have been discharged with wounds Sept 1917. However, he was born 1898 which would make him about 19 not 21. (I have several men who lied about age on enrolment) No mention of this SWB Robert having served with the Foresters. All I have is an “iffy” possible as no other Robert Pierpoint discovered. Suggestions welcomed Peter

    3. Hi Peter I would come to the same conclusion as you have re the man in the MGC At the start of the war the machine guns were under each unit, mainly due to the lack of modern thinking in the upper officers It was realised that better organisation and training was necessary so the MGC was formed in Oct 1915, drawing men already in other units that were trained as machine gunners So its quite possible a man who joined the Sherwood Foresters might end up in the MGC Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 29/07/2018 14:28, Peter Patilla via DERBYSGEN wrote: > Good afternoon > I am rather unhappy with the WW1 record I have for Robert Pierpoint. > > A family member has provided a photo of him in the uniform of the Sherwood Foresters. > Photos in the Derbyshire Courier dated 2 & 5 June 1917 show Lce Cpl R Pierpoint Crich, wounded (hatless and no regiment clue). 3. Nivard Wow, that was quick thank you. It would explain most worries I had. The fact that on his medal card only MGC is shown – should that worry me? I am more convinced now that this is “my” man Peter > On 29 Jul 2018, at 14:28, Peter Patilla via DERBYSGEN <derbysgen@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > Good afternoon > I am rather unhappy with the WW1 record I have for Robert Pierpoint. > > A family member has provided a photo of him in the uniform of the Sherwood Foresters. > Photos in the Derbyshire Courier dated 2 & 5 June 1917 show Lce Cpl R Pierpoint Crich, wounded (hatless and no regiment clue). 3. I would have liked to have seen both regiments on the medal card but its far from the first time I have only seen one but the man was known to have served in more than one Proof positive may be hard to come by Like you I have checked the available records but found no mention of the service in the Sherwood Foresters but as he joined up 24th Oct 1914 and the MGC wasn't formed until Oct 1915 it stands to reason he had to have served in a different regiment before the MGC Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 29/07/2018 20:21, Peter Patilla via DERBYSGEN wrote: > Nivard > > Wow, that was quick thank you.
