    3. Hello listers, I am trying to establish which school in Derbyshire my mother would have attended between about 1913 and 1922. I visited the archives at Matlock a few years ago and looked at the admissions registers that they have but with no success. Details. My mother was May IVINS (b 1909) plus elder sister Beatrice Ellen IVINS (b 1907) and younger brother James William IVINS (b 1912) Parents James William IVINS (1877-1959) m to Ellen (nee BRANT) (1884-1975) They lived on the Alderwasley Estate where the father was a gamekeeper from 1912 until sometime in the 1920s. Mum always claimed that they ‘walked four miles to school each day.’ I would like to see how likely this was. She also referred to the headteacher as a man. I am aware that there was in fact a small school on the estate but this appears to have only had women teachers. From the maps the obvious places would be Wirksworth, Whatstandwell, Crich or Ambergate. Can any lister with knowledge of the area offer any suggestions please Chris Hicks

    3. You could try looking for the school log books. I found interesting details about my grandmother who taught in Stanton Hill Infants in Notts, and my grandfather who attended it earlier. of course it helps if you know exactly which school … > On 30 May 2018, at 17:02, Chris Hicks via DERBYSGEN <derbysgen@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > Hello listers, > > I am trying to establish which school in Derbyshire my mother would have attended between about 1913 and 1922. 3. Alderwasley is just above Wirksworth so I would assume that she went to school there. There was a Wirksworth National School, a primary school, a grammer school and also a school in Alderwasley. Log books are held at the Matlock record office. Crich is across the moor so I think it would be too far a hike from Alderwasley.
