I've been looking at the burial image of the above in Hognaston (if anyone has access it's page 33/50). Can anyone help me decipher what is written in the 'who performed the ceremony' column please - his father was Joseph WEBSTER, a baker. Thanks Joan
Hi Joan I had to smile at two of the transcripts on Ancestry of John *Lovegrone* WEBSTER ;-) The last column of the burial register reads :- Certified under the act by Joseph WEBSTER Provisions Dealer &c I believe this refers to the 1880 burials act As I understand it those who practised another religion, or no religion could be buried in the churchyard and certified by the person named who had to provide a burial certificate from the death registration, ie without a C of E burial service Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/05/2018 14:50, Joan wrote: > I've been looking at the burial image of the above in Hognaston (if anyone has access it's page 33/50). Thanks Nirvard, first time I've come across it - the brother Joseph also has the same in 1881. I have a transcript of Hognaston memorial inscriptions and God is certainly mentioned on the stone so it looks like another religion. joan On 30/05/2018 15:18:10, Nivard Ovington <ovington.one@gmail.com> wrote: There was a similar certified burial for George WEBSTER 4 days old in 1896 Hognaston By Joseph WEBSTER ?? retired tradesman Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/05/2018 15:10, Nivard Ovington wrote: > Hi Joan > > I had to smile at two of the transcripts on Ancestry of John *Lovegrone* > WEBSTER ;-) > > The last column of the burial register reads :- > > Certified under the act by Joseph WEBSTER Provisions Dealer &c > > I believe this refers to the 1880 burials act > > As I understand it those who practised another religion, or no religion > could be buried in the churchyard and certified by the person named who > had to provide a burial certificate from the death registration, ie > without a C of E burial service > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > On 30/05/2018 14:50, Joan wrote: >> I've been looking at the burial image of the above in Hognaston (if >> anyone has access it's page 33/50). I think they were Methodists as I've had a Google and Websters are mentioned as a prominent Methodist family in the Hognaston chapel. So next question is where is it best to go for Methodist records online? Hi again Those available online would be under nonconformist records which are on both Ancestry & Findmypast Although there are some WEBSTER events in Derbyshire there do not appear to be any for your period Perhaps the county records office might have more on what circuit Hognaston belonged to and where records if deposited are Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/05/2018 16:23, Joan wrote: > I think they were Methodists as I've had a Google and Websters are mentioned as a prominent Methodist family in the Hognaston chapel.
