    3. On the BBC East Midlands news tonight they did a piece on a local artist about whom i knew nothing - Ernest Townsend.  I did as recommended and had a look on a website (see link below) and was delighted to find scenes of Derby id never seen before, not surprising as they are in storage apparently!  Exeter Bridge, Darley lane & Bridge Gate corner, The Guildhall, widening the road in front of St Michaels etc etc.  He lived 1885 to 1944. Also paintings of lots of local worthies from Derby and aroundabouts!  Worth a peek! Apparently he also designed the camouflage on Royce's factory roofing to look like rows of terraced houses!! http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/artists/ernest-townsend/ Andrea

    3. Hello Andrea We have enjoyed looking at these paintings. From the geographical spread of the sitters he obviously had a good reputation as a competent portraitist. We found the street scenes and landscapes more interesting though and I would like to have seen more of them dated. The `Your Paintings` website, which the link takes you to is an attempt, completed in 2012, to digitise every painting held in a public collection and includes a couple of my husband`s. So if you have a favourite painting you know to be in a public collection, it should be on the website. best wishes Marjorie Ward Derbyshire, UK Sources for Disley; Lyme Handley; Taxal & Whaley www.disley.net Sources for Hollingworths www.hollingworths.net Sources for NWDby incl Chapel; Charlesworth; Chinley; Fernilee; Glossop; Hayfield; Hope Valley; Mellor & New Mills http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dusk John Ward Paintings: www.johnward-art.com

    3. Hi Andrea, I saw that item as well, and well worth a look. I just typed in Derbyshire and there are masses of places covered. Sadly some are unidentified, but I wonder if the list could identify those places called, "a Derbyshire farm" or a Derbyshire lane" etc. You never know we might be able to put some names to the pictures. Of course artistic licence is always going to be a problem, but you never know. mike On Tue, Feb 12, 2013 at 8:49 PM, Andrea Newham <andreanewham@hotmail.com>wrote: > On the BBC East Midlands news tonight they did a piece on a local artist > about whom i knew nothing - Ernest Townsend.
