    1. [DBY] RANDALL, Elizabeth on 1911 Census
    2. Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I was just looking for my maternal grandmother on the 1911 Census and under the column Nationality, it says 'Brit Sub by marriage' or it might be 'patronage' 'parentage' or similar - its not very easy to read. I wonder if anyone knows what this means, as far as I am aware she was born in Derbyshire and so were all her ancestors, at least back to John Randall b 1873 which is as far as I've got back. Any help appreciated please. Lin

    3. Hi Lin What it means is that the person filling in the form did not read it properly (like many others they misunderstood it) The heading states Nationality of every person *born in a foreign Country* Many misunderstood the request and added the details for all people regardless of where they were born, such as you have, there was no need to fill in the column if they were not born abroad In that column the other sub questions were State whether :- (1) British subject by parentage (2) Naturalised British subject giving year of naturalisation or (3) If of foreign nationality state whether French, german, Russian etc So you will see yours is (1) Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 25/04/2013 10:02, Lcsearch3528@aol.com wrote: > Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. > > I was just looking for my maternal grandmother on the 1911 Census and under > the column Nationality, it says 'Brit Sub by marriage' or it might be > 'patronage' 'parentage' or similar - its not very easy to read.
