Hi Lynda For many years I failed to find my g.g.grandparents marriage circa 1840's in Yorkshire I had resigned myself to thinking they never married, it did not shock or surprise me (nothing really does any more in family history <g>) When the local office made their indexes available online I was surprised to find their marriage was amongst them in 1843, rechecking the GRO I confirmed it was not there, so checked further to find several other life events at the local office level that are either completely missing from or are misspelled in the GRO I don't think there are any free online searchable indexes from the local offices as yet but there are a growing number becoming available for other Counties Many to be found on http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/ (there are some for Derbyshire on the pay site findmypast) So unless you have already done so I would try an enquiry at the local level Of course they may never have married, many didn't, or left it until years later in a place you are not expecting to find them Another g.g.grandfather of mine was widowed before the 1881 census, by the 1891 he was enumerated with a wife Ann, again for years I could not find a marriage, when Ancestry brought the London registers out I eventually found the marriage in 1881, his name is in the GRO index as WILLS it should have been WELLS, the marriage in Kensington was miles from where they lived in Bucks The marriage cert, signed by James WELLS was filled in by the vicar or a clerk and shows what looks like WILLS complete with a dot over the i, so mistakes were made at all levels, even by the person marrying Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 07/06/2013 21:39, Lynda Sallis wrote: > I've been researching my family tree for 15 years and have never been > able to find a marriage for my gt-grandparents, Joseph SALLIS and > Hannah BEMBRIDGE (even looking for alternative spellings.)
