Being something of an optimist I thought I would post some brief details of a SMITH family about whom I would like to know more. Ann SMITH married George Roberts at St Peters, Derby on 15th May 1815. Both came from Cubley, Ann's baptism being on 2nd July 1797. I believe that Ann's father was James SMITH, who was born around 1758 (I have found a burial in Cubley of a James Smith aged 86 on 2nd October 1844). At the time of the 1841 census James was a farmer at Cubley Hollies, with George and Ann and some of their children living with him there. I have also come across a settlement certificate for a James and Sophia Smith from Snelston to Cubley in 1784. Unfortunately I'm unlikely to be able to visit DRO any time soon to check the Snelston PRs. If anyone has any further information on James Smith or his family I would be really pleased to hear from them. Thanks Andy
Hi All I am interested in STURGES(S) in the Repton, Ticknall and Newton Solney area. Benjamin appears to be a favoured family Christian name. My husband's earliest ancestor on this branch is Benjamin STURGES born about 1710 and died May 1779 - buried in Newton Solney on May 31st. He married Hannah TARR - one for the Ts - on 15 July 1733 in Repton. On 12 Sept 1733 there is a Settlement Certificate for them from Newton Solney to Ticknall. Three of their 8 children were born in Ticknall, the rest later in Newton Solney. I have no other details of Hannah - not even her burial - except as a mother on the baptism records of the children. Any details of STURGESS in this area or TARR? I have details of some STURGESS families including some apprenticeship details but they don't fit together!! Hi All, Totally stuck looking for birth/parents of Benjamin Torr b 1792 Hathersage. DRO no records for him 1785-1801. He married Hannah Whyatt in Manchester 1825, had 6 children 1825-1848. Found a burial for a Benjamin Torr in Hathersage 30 Aug 1822 aged 49 but can't verify he was father of 1792 born Benjamin. Found a marriage by Licence in Hathersage 17 May 1792, Robert Torr & Ann Frost (possibly pregnant)? can't find any birth. Witness for Licence application (in Edale) & marriage, John Wilkin. Also found a Removal Order Ann Frost, pregnant, from Hathersage to Thornsett in 1790. Waiting reply on this from Michael Spencer, if Order gives her age (30 at marriage) I can see if it might be the same person. The baby was a boy, but father was Thos. Brown. If anyone has any of these on their trees or any suggestions, I would be very grateful, as I might then be able to eliminate red herrings! I am intrigued to find out about my Derbyshire ancestors. Hello fellow family history researchers, My brick wall relates to which of the two William STAFFORDs, b1711 in Wirksworth and Kirk Ireton, respectively, was part of the Stafford line that spread out to London, Notts., Lincs., Yorks. and Lancs. The fathers of both Williams were called John and suitable candidates were baptised in Kirk Ireton in 1683 and 1674. Only one John STAFFORD marriage has been located (to Ann HALL in 1705). One of the Williams died in 1711 and was buried in Kirk Ireton, but the Parish Register does not provide for an explicit identification of the mother. A search of Sue Brown's very useful Derbyshire marriage index does not yield the missing marriage. Both of the putative fathers can be killed off, as can many of the two Williams' siblings; but a local burial of Ann STAFFORD has not been found. Does anyone have knowledge of another marriage for John STAFFORD around 1702 in the area? Base on the selection of children's names, his wife may have been called Ellen. It may be a red herring, but does anyone have any further knowledge of a John STAFFORD born in Kirk Ireton who appeared in the settlement records for Riseley in 1761 (from Mike Spencer's excellent site)? Could he be the John, son of John and Ann STAFFORD baptised in 1720 at Kirk Ireton? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
