Marjorie, Why would he want separate pews for each property he owned? He could only sit in one of them! I know he was a philanthropist but paying pew rent for his tenants seems a little over the top. Just a thought. Regards Eric Millward
Hi Eric, as far as I can tell, it was common practice for people to rent more than one pewspace if they could afford to - for use of other family members, servants, tenants. Even people who were only comfortably off, not rich, like the RENSHAWs of Old Brampton near Chesterfield, might have multiple pews (1707 Pew List held at DRO). Hello Eric The reason I thought all the properties belonged to Sam OLDKNOW is because in all I have read about the period and area I have not come across another one. I have just looked at Cheshire Registers on FMP and he is the only Marple one mentioned. Disappointingly his will wasn`t there. best wishes Marjorie Ward Derbyshire, UK Sources for Disley; Lyme Handley; Taxal & Whaley www.disley.net Sources for Hollingworths www.hollingworths.net Sources for NWDby incl Chapel; Charlesworth; Chinley; Fernilee; Glossop; Hayfield; Hope Valley; Mellor & New Mills http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dusk John Ward Paintings: www.johnward-art.com
