What a wonderful collection of old Mellor names! Mr Jowett of Lower Hall was a local landowner. The land on which my house stands was leased from his descendant's widow. Saml Pickford was presumably an ancestor of the Sam Pickford who farmed the land behind where I now live. Mr (Samuel) Oldknow was the man who brought the cotton industry to Mellor in 1790. And was Jas Walklate a descendant of the Thomas Walklate (d 1637) who gave Mellor its first school and founded the Walklate Educational Trust?
