Mike's post about Mellor gravestones includes: Mr OLDKNOW Windl Bottom 1s. Samuel OLDKNOW was a local industrialist and entrepreneur but this may be another member of his family .... there are several OLDKNOWS on Mike's list. This location could be Windy Bottom which is now known as Roman Bridge over the river Goyt on an old packhorse route. The change of name is down to the Victorians who thought the old name rather vulgar. Eric Millward
Hello Mike and Eric First Mike - thank you for these - I am looking at how I can add them to the website. Also Ralph HYDE is one of mine. Eric - I wondered if these were all properties owned by Sam OLDKNOW. Strawberry Hill, for example is in the same area as his industrial estate. best wishes Marjorie Ward Derbyshire, UK Sources for Disley; Lyme Handley; Taxal & Whaley www.disley.net Sources for Hollingworths www.hollingworths.net Sources for NWDby incl Chapel; Charlesworth; Chinley; Fernilee; Glossop; Hayfield; Hope Valley; Mellor & New Mills http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dusk John Ward Paintings: www.johnward-art.com
