Hi Chris This is not strictly true I have come across quite a number where the hyphen is shown and I have a copy of the marriage also I have a number where the child is illegitimate and the mothers maiden name is given as Bowden. I suspect the hyphen means the name is not transcribed or cannot be read bearing in mind that all the transcripts are electronically derived so something that cannot be read or makes no sense is replaced with a hyphen. I have found with experience the hyphen means nothing.
