    1. [DBY]Castleton "Blue John"
    2. Hi, fellow seekers, While trolling through some Military History information I saw the term "Castleton Blue John". I thought this might be a well-known character, but I was wrong. "Blue John" is a semi-precious mineral, Fluorite. That only added to my confusion. But it came up in military history because one of the more famous mines for Fluorite is in Castleton, DBY, and during WWII, the mineral was mined in and processed in an old mill in Castleton for future use in steel making. I had collected all the Castleton burials that Mike SPENCER published, so I put them online today. I added a few more that I found And you can see them all at: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.genuki.org.uk_big_eng_DBY_Castleton_Burials&d=DwICaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=YaknIKGQ3o9fStB3h0sMI9MrdNSOVs352NJVvwA-IWw&m=APglDKtPOOsTa0tzDZDHgzRRU_jO8NMUTt68Z9U5iqQ&s=rMzwZ5XrvZocjDmqmM4Nk9wMn9CIAeOy-DYAqWlakJ0&e= I'm hoping that you find a few lost ancestors and mesh them into your tree. Now, dust off that Blue Johnand move it to a place of honor. Lou Mills

    3. Apparently Blue John is pretty well mined out now, so it has become expensive to buy jewellery made from it. You can still take a boat ride through the mine - a very interesting tour. 2. I have a simple silver ring, with a rough cut Blue John stone in it. It was my Mom’s and I recall her talking about it. She was born and lived in DBY (so was I) until we emigrated to the USA. She said she toured the mine and bought the ring there. I have it with me now. —WendyE Sent from my iPad > On Sep 11, 2018, at 4:43 PM, ANNE <granne@cogeco.ca> wrote: > > Apparently Blue John is pretty well mined out now, so it has become expensive to buy jewellery made from it. > > You can still take a boat ride through the mine - a very interesting tour. > Anne > > > -----Original Message----- From: lr_mills@mauimail.com > Sent: Tuesday, September 11, 2018 5:12 PM > To: derbysgen > Subject: [DBY]Castleton "Blue John" > > Hi, fellow seekers, > > While trolling through some Military History information I saw the term "Castleton Blue John". 3. Hi, Blue John is still mined at Blue John Cavern in the winter months. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.bluejohn-2Dcavern.co.uk&d=DwICaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=YaknIKGQ3o9fStB3h0sMI9MrdNSOVs352NJVvwA-IWw&m=z5MgdtRzRPb_3uutFXR3m80Oi7yUSAtj44QMD8fITe8&s=9vDakKQL4vwkT8Ys4SGscdO0iyRh6lC8TYOmD95yb28&e= There were several mines, and it is Speedwell Cavern that is the one with the underground stream that does boat rides. Treak Cliff and Peak Cavern are other old mines. regards Richard Tetley On 11/09/2018 23:43, ANNE wrote: > Apparently Blue John is pretty well mined out now, so it has become > expensive to buy jewellery made from it. > > You can still take a boat ride through the mine - a very interesting > tour. > Anne
