Hi, I am a KEETON and I have a little info re some KEETON’s who emigrated. Jane Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: timkeeton@windstream.net Sent: 10 September 2018 20:32 To: derbysgen@rootsweb.com Subject: [DBY]Re: DBY] Anyone out there still breathing? Hello, I realize I am responding to an older post, but I am looking for information about any KEETON/KEATON family members who emigrated to the North American colonies in the 1600s/1700s. I can trace my KEETON ancestors back to Virginia and the Carolinas for sure back to around the 1730s, and probably (just haven't proved the connection yet) back to the early 1600s; e.g. Jamestown, etc. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am wondering if they could be connected to the Derbyshire bunch. I am on Ancestry.com, 23andMe, and ftDNA, and have done DNA testing. My GEDMatch#s are: M284212 & A308576. Andy Thank you for this. I have had a quick look and indeed the Salvation Army were active during WW1. Hi all You may have noticed when a url is posted it seems to be a lot longer than usual This is because Rootsweb are employing "proofpoint" to validate urls that are genuine (so in our best interests) You will see any posted url starts https://urldefense.proofpoint.com But still works as it should So if you are worried about clicking one you should be safe to do so One note that needs mentioning, please please when replying to any post, please delete the previous footer (plus any other irrelevant text) as the footer is added after the post, so is not treated as a posted url But when repeated back to the list, its treated as a posted url, so makes a huge post filled for no good reason, and is also filling the archives Thank you -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)
Hello Helen My branch of the HIGTON family moved away from Wirksworth in the 1860s, so my knowledge of later HIGTONs there is largely limited to the information publicly available. The latest substantial body of information available is the 1939 Register, so I can't place the family to which you refer, although they are doubtless part of my family. Your comment about insurance reminds me that my wife's grandma took out a policy in 1946, as a 21st birthday present for her daughter. I don't know how you paid in the few pence each week, but it paid out £5 each year, which was intended for the purchase of a new winter coat. It's still paying out £5 every year! However, they sent a letter a few years ago saying that they didn't need any further premiums paying. I suppose it was costing them more to administer than the income received. Good morning After a fascinating visit to Draycott to see their commemoration to those who served during the Great War (an excellent and informative display) I was moved to relook at my VAD records. As a consequence I have updated and added to the records on https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.crichparish-2Dww1.co.uk&d=DwIFaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=YaknIKGQ3o9fStB3h0sMI9MrdNSOVs352NJVvwA-IWw&m=kyJ0JXb_jV5f_YDiY3I8zcEr_kMMJgHR30qFn-Q35-I&s=GvXHe0HSd7q5P53gxePxwoOamM3NUfIS9ldEfV18pxc&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.crichparish-2Dww1.co.uk_&d=DwIFaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=YaknIKGQ3o9fStB3h0sMI9MrdNSOVs352NJVvwA-IWw&m=kyJ0JXb_jV5f_YDiY3I8zcEr_kMMJgHR30qFn-Q35-I&s=VcyJ5rJon1ACS2WzbRGT8Ol89oRqiDyIM7GfFswLMQo&e=> adding what I consider interesting documents relating to VAD nurses and staff. If any of your relations were involved you should find these of interest. I particularly like the list of “Don’ts” . These include amongst others: DON’T forget to stand up when seniors come into the ward or room. DON’T forget that duty comes before pleasure. DON’T expect your own particular feelings or likes to be considered. You are but one of many. DON’T forget to ‘Bring your will to your work, and suit your mind to your circumstances – for that which is not for the interests of the whole swarm is not the interest of the single bee’ (Marcus Aurelius). Whilst exploring VAD records I happen chanced upon reports about the role of the YMCA during the war. About which I knew nothing (to my shame). I was surprised to discover that 38 civilian members of the YMCA have military graves across the world. In my frequent searches of the CWGC records how could that have passed me by? I have added some information and links on the website. On my to-do list after getting the new Roll of Honour ready for its church blessing and the book of biographies printed ready for the November centenary (with an enormous amount of help from my co-researcher Simon Johnson) I aim to revisit the role of the YMCA and other voluntary organisations who were active during the war. This should keep me busily occupied in my dotage :-) Peter
Thanks for looking, but this is not "our" John Palmer. There is a brief resume on his Wirksworth website: "Rosie and I live in a small bungalow in a village near Poole in Dorset, England. I was born in the Blitz in London in 1940, moved to Worksop Notts, schooled at Retford Grammar, then back to London Uni as a student of Physics. Worked on the supersonic Harrier project, got sick of London, moved to Dorset in 1966 and bought the bungalow two years later. I worked for Plessey as an electronics and software engineer, and learned to drive computers. Rosie trained as a nurse, worked in Texas, went round the world three times as a children's nanny on an immigrant liner, then became a Scientific Officer at Winfrith atomic research centre in Dorset. We took early retirement in 1990, we've no children so we took the opportunity to travel. I was able to give up my career and take up my hobbies. I found a Twitter account for John and the last entry was 27th August 2016 and he appeared to be well then as he was talking about planting some oak saplings and looking for helpers. So it’s strange that Nick was unable to contact him in 2015 or 2016. Hi Nick Yes we have all come to the same conclusion Should I ever get in contact I will let the list know Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 07/09/2018 21:02, Nick Higton wrote: > You'll note that John's website hasn't been updated since 21 April 2015. > > I tried to contact him a couple of time during 2015/16, including > sending him a cheque to buy a CD of his website (that included images of > Ince's pedigrees). You'll note that John's website hasn't been updated since 21 April 2015. I tried to contact him a couple of time during 2015/16, including sending him a cheque to buy a CD of his website (that included images of Ince's pedigrees). The cheque was never cashed. I have a retired Service Dog and we used to spend an hour twice a week at an elder care home providing "Canine Therapy" to the residents. I met some lovely people, many of whom could not remember us from our last visit, but most clearly loved a visit with my Labrador Retriever. Unfortunately the "office politics" of the management made us forgo further visits - although I did consider filing a complaint against the management, I couldn't see that it would help the patients any. It was distressing to see some of my former co-workers as "residents" in this facility. They get basic care but most don't have any advocates for their health care or even physical therapy. Still, a guest could "sign out" a resident to take them to lunch or a daytime movie. This is not normally a problem unless one of the "residents" has escaped - then the whole facility may be closed to visitors. I was able to take a former co-worker out to lunch a couple of times. She really enjoyed a chance to talk about "old times" with someone who didn't have to run off to oversee another client.
