    1. [DBY] BLACKBURN of Matlock
    2. Barbara Johnston
    3. I am searching for info on a great uncle who had butcher's shop or shops in Matlock. His name was Lewis Blackburn. Does anyone have any local knowledge of the shops or even know the address. Google searches don't seem to bring up anything. The rest of the family stayed in Yorkshire except for Walter his youngest brother who came to work with Lewis and only died a few years back. I understand there was a van but don't know exactly when he opened his shops or who he worked for beforehand. He was an apprentice in the 1911 in Thurnscoe, Yorkshire. Hoping somebody can help even with a scrap of info. Thank you Barbara Johnston

    3. Hi Andrea, You bring back memories! Dave Sudbury (a local lad) came to the Peasmouldia Folk Club in Derby around 1995 and performed the 'King of Rome'. A couple of other 'Derby' songs are the famous Derby Ram, many versions of which can be found on YouTube. Another lesser know song is the Great Derby Footrace. No trace of this song on Youtube but it can be found on the CD 'Well Seasoned by Keith Kendrick. Wildgoose Records WGS 317 CD. The event was held for many years on Sinfin Moor just outside of Derby between Christmas and Easter. Interestingly Sinfin Moor was known locally as 'The Bog' and was always considered unfit to build on. It is now a very large housing estate! He entered it into a famous race in 1913 and was not expected to get his pigeon back from its long journey from Rome......but he did! It made him quite famous for a while and the story has been turned into a folk-song. It's a first for me to hear a song about a Derbien/Derbyite (?) not the least because I have an interest in the surname too. Anyway I thought there may be others out there interested too! Here's a link to the story and if you search YouTube you'll find the song performed by a group called The Unthanks with the Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band (amoungst others!) http://www.derbyphotos.co.uk/features/kingofrome/index.htm I quite easily found him at 56 Brook St on the 1911 census with his wife Elizabeth, step-daughter and 2 children. Hope others enjoy the story as I did Andrea Newham Researching HUFTON, UFTON, RATCLIFF(E), BEES(T)ON, TITTERTON, SPENCER, HUDSON, COULSON, SHEPHERD, HOLMES, BIRCH.......mainly Derby but just discovered a branch or two in Ontario and British Columbia!! ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to DERBYSGEN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ----- No virus found in this message. 3. Hi Mike Horses and Bullocks were used to pull heavy loads. I presume from time to time enough horses were not available. I have a photo of a farming relative where a cart was being pulled by a horse and bullock, not side by side but the bullock in front of the horse. The photo was taken in Derbyshire in the middle of the 20th century. 3. Thank you Marjorie, My SPENCER'S came from Thornsett but originated from the Clayton Le Moors area in Lancashire. They moved into Derbyshire around 1805. They were in the Calico trade which I think was just starting up in the New Mills area. Your  site info (maps) gave me a better in site as to the area homes they lived in. Actually I did not see many homes where I looked, it gave me the impression it was pretty bleak spot. I would think the local pub would have been a welcome spot of relief for these 'early settlers' . 1. [DBY] Arithmetick in 17th Century
    2. John Palmer
    3. Hello ffolks, Here's what 11 year olds were learning in 1695. Its much easier to understand using Algebra. Those interested, look up "Rule of Three" in Wikipedia ---------------- The Rule of Three gained notoriety for being particularly difficult to explain: see Cocker's Arithmetick for an example of how the premier textbook in the 17th century approached the subject. Though popular, like most texts of its time, Arithmetick style is formal, stiff and difficult to follow as illustrated in its explanation of the "rule of three". "Again, observe, that of the three given numbers, those two that are of the same kind, one of them must be the first, and the other the third, and that which is of the same kind with the number sought, must be the second number in the rule of three; and that you may know which of the said numbers to make your first, and which your third, know this, that to one of those two numbers there is always affixed a demand, and that number upon which the demand lieth must always be reckoned the third number" ------------- See www.eyemead.com/GILLwill.htm#ruleofthree Regards, John Palmer, Dorset, England
