Barbara Blackburns were Pork Butchers on Crown Square at Matlock Their pork sausages and hazlet were fantastic. I remember going every week on my Rudge bicycle for these items (plus red-skinned polony and black pudding for father) When they left (in the 1950s I think) we hoped they would pass on the recipe for the sausages to the butcher who took over from them. The new butcher told us that they did not do this as the recipe was a family secret and so would not pass it on; it would die with them Since then I have tried to find a comparable sausage and (although it took many years) found that Old English sausage from Crich Butchers is a good match. Thanks Paul - I've found the Great Derby Footrace on MySpace! Must play it again as I couldn't make out all the names? Was it factual do you know? I could make out someone called Shaw from Staffs getting beaten by our (local?) lad! Great stuff. As for 'The Derby Ram' i HAD heard of it but I was just familiar with snatches of it! Slightly different versions abound especially pronouncing Derby like its spelt. Was it EVER pronounced such here I wonder? Mentions of eagles nesting made me laugh! Ref: the Bog! How topical! Wonder if it floods? I'm out at Shipley on top of a hill so safe from watery deluges!
