For many years I have researched my own family of Streets, Ash's, Hawley's etc in Derbyshire. My married family, KELLAND are all from Dartmouth in Devon, However, this Christmas I received a surprise email from someone giving me some incredibly wonderful insight into the Kelland family together with a birth certificate of one of great grandfather's children. Which says that the child's mother ANNIE JANE nee GILLARD was born in Derbyshire! That was a surprise. I thought she was from Devon too although I've never found her in the census records with her parents. Does anyone have ANNIE JANE GILLARD, born 1856 in Derbyshire? There's a few Annie Jane Gillards born in Devon which are far more likely to fit (I haven't ordered birth certificates yet) I thought it may be possible that she was born in Derbyshire but registered in Devon? Has anyone got Annie Jane who moved to Dartmouth and married Francis Arthur Kelland then moved to South Africa? Of course there is also the chance that since the child referred to above was born in South Africa, the South African authorities simply put Derbyshire down as an area they knew!! It's always worth a try though!! Happy new surprises in 2013 everyone! -- Rose Kelland www.rosescountryrose.blogspot.com www.livesandtimesofbella.blogspot.com

Hi Joy, something else I saw was the following.. Historically, Sale was a township in the ancient parish of Ashton upon Mersey in the hundred of Bucklow and county of Cheshire. This means it was in Cheshire at one time. I am looking for GEORGE and HANNAH RATCLIFFE (d/o William & Ruth MARTIN) last located on the 1851 in Crich, when both were aged 28 and George was a FWK. Prunella.
Can't find her christening in Hope St Peter or Taxal St James. Don't have access to Fairfield St Peter transcription. ________________________________ From: Patricia Andrew <pdandrew32@gmail.com> To: DERBYSGEN@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, 27 December 2012, 4:01 Subject: [DBY] Looking for Hannah Cocker in Hope 1760s My 4x great-grandmother, Hannah Cocker, married Peter Andrew in Eyam Parish Church 29 Dec 1783. The marriage register recorded her as being "of Hope." The witnesses were Robert How and William Cocker, who might have been her father or brother, or even an uncle. Hannah appears in the 1841 census as age 75. Given the rounding up or down that was used for that census, I would surmise she might have been born around 1763 - 1769. What a wonderful idea ! Trying to find any trace of Rob MIDDLETON, a druggist by profession, in England prior to 1839. Came to the U.S. Sept. 5, 1839 with wife Ann & daughters Jane & Mary. Rob MIDDLETON, b. approx. 1795 wife, Ann, b. approx. 1796 dau., Jane, b. Dec. 24, 1818 dau., Mary, b. approx. 1828 Jane MIDDLETON mentions several people from Tideswell in her 1885 will (siblings: Edward HUNSTONE & Jane HUNSTONE DAVIS.) Edward HUNSTONE's wife was Mary Ann MIDDLETON, however have not yet documented any connection between Jane MIDDLETON & the people in her will.) Thank you, Sherri Princeton, NJ, USA

My 3x great grandmother was Frances Horlow according to a record I have found for her marriage to John Peach at St Alkmund's Derby on the 29th January 1828. She was his second wife, his first Lydia having died in October 1827. John was born and baptised in Kedleston and as a result all of his children were too so I have quite good records of them and him as I know he as a stockiner in 1820 and a lacemaker in 1830 before becoming an ag lab later. I have to assume he was in Kedleston from his first marriage in 1809 although the first address time this is confirmed is in 1841. Frances, on every census says she was born in Nottingham in 1801. This age is confirmed on her death certificate. That is all I know of her. I can't find any Horlows in the Midlands area so I suspect is should be Harlow but I can't find any Nottingham Harlows either. I have looked for male siblings in the 1841 and 1851 censuses but can't find any that were born in Nottingham. There are quite a few Derby Harlows but none with a Nottingham connection. Tantalisingly I find one Harlow family in 1841 living quite close to a Peach family in Little Chester but I don't have this Peach family in my tree and there are quite a few unconnected branches of them in Derby. I did wonder if she had been married before as she would have been about 27 when she married John but the only two Harlow marriages I can find between 1820 and 1828 are not likely candidates. Has anybody any ideas of where I can look?. If anyone has access to the St Alkmund's records that might help, but I live in Devon so that won't happen anytime soon. I would love to know who the witnesses were and why they married there when all other things happened at Kedleston. Happy new year to all. Merry Christmas everyone. Hope you had a wonderful day? I'm taking Charani up on her quest to bring home the lost ancestors. I posted the following on the LINCSGEN list in April 2011 and I still haven't had much luck finding the information I would love to find out about my 2nd great grandfather. One of my 2nd great-grandfather's has been a brickwall for many many years and I don't see me bringing this one down any time soon so if anyone can find this little blighter I will be forever grateful. :) Here is what I have on so far: 1. His name was William WRIGHT and from the two (maybe three) censuses I have found him in his birth year works out to between 1833 and 1837. 2. I cannot find him anywhere in the 1841 or 1851 census. Either under WRIGHT or HUTTON. 3. I think I may have found him in 1861; a William WRIGHT living in Maltby-le-Marsh, aged 24, unmarried, Ag. Lab and born in Theddlethorpe. To find this entry I took out a map and checked it against every William WRIGHT's birth place in this census, this entry was the one closest to Saltfleetby. 4. On 21st November, 1867 he married Susan LAKE in Mablethorpe. Both their ages were given as full so there is no specific age to go on. Neither had been married before. Now William's father's name is given as _______HUTTON (Labourer). I have not come across it written like this before but I'm assuming this means he was illegitimate and knew his father was a Mr. HUTTON. The witnesses are no help they were Benjamin and Mary Jane LAKE, Susan's brother and sister-in-law. The certificate does state by Banns not license. 5. From the 1871 and 1881 census he gave his birth place as Saltfleetby and his occupation was Ag. Lab/Labourer. 6. He and Susan had seven children that I know of; Walter LAKE (1867 Grimsby), John (1869 Trusthorpe), Mary Ann (1871 Mablethorpe), George (1872 Trusthorpe), Mark (1875 - Huttoft - my great-grandfather), Benjamin (1880 Withcall) and Alice (1882 Huttoft) 6. On Mark's birth certificate (1875) William's occupation was Farm Labourer. 7. On Mark's marriage certificate (1903) William's occupation was given as Foreman. 8. In the 1891 census, Susan, is listed as a Widow living with two of her children Benjamin aged 11 years born Withcall and Alice aged 8 years born Alford. 9. So William died between 1883 and 1891 but there are a few William WRIGHT death registrations and I'm not sure which one is him. I don't have the updated NBI so I don't know if there is a burial for him. 10. I'm not sure if he left a will or not either I checked the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations),1861-1941 at Ancestry and can't find any reference to him. 11. I have tried looking for a baptism via the IGI and the records on Ancestry but so far I haven't found anything. It doesn't help that there are so many Saltfleetby's. It would be wonderful to find out who his mother/parents were, where he was actually born/baptised and where he died or was buried. UPDATE: I have checked for baptisms in Saltfleeby All Saints, St. Clements and St. Peters. I believe I also checked both Theddlethorpe and Theddlethorpe St. Helens all on LincstothePast.com without any luck either. I think this has to be one of the biggest brickwalls that I have come across and if anyone can help I would be forever in your debt. Take care Jayne
Merry Christmas...and not quite lost.. My ancestor William Hemmingray came to the US in 1843 with his father John Hemmingray and mother Ann (Ellis) from Belper. I am trying to figure out who Ann's parents might have been? She was born circa 1796, though the census record in 1841 makes her appear older. There was a "biography" written about William here in the US around the turn of the 20th century. He had become a noted mine inspector. In the biography, the author stated that Ann Ellis Hemmingray's family came from the area of Castle Donington. Every record that I have for them, including William's death record states that his parents were from Belper or Heague. There is a record in the IGI for an Ann Ellis born to William and Dorothy Ellis of Derbyshire, that looks promising. I just don't know where to go with this. Season's greeting to all whether you have been celebrating Hanukkah or are celebrating Christmas, Kwanzaa, Saturnalia or another fesitval. All of us have ancestors we cannot find, who've strayed or otherwise become lost. So, from now until New Year's Day, post the names and last known location, together with any other information you are sure of, to give others a chance to try to find your missing ancestors. These lost and strayed souls do NOT have to be from our area. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
