    1. [DBY] HIBBERT/HIBBERD
    2. Len Heyward
    3. A happy new year listers. For some time now I have been keeping a close watch on Mike Spencer's very valuable lists of burials, etc., looking for some references to my HIBBERT/HIBBERD familes, sadly without success. The HIBBERT/HIBBERD family were generally residing or centred on Edensor from at least 1755 until later than 1881. Some were employed on Chatsworth estate. From the somewhat little information I have been able to obtain of main events (baptisms, marriages, deaths), they did appear in the following villages as following: 1730 Duffield 1782 Tideswell 1788 Tideswell 1793 to 1798 Pilsley 1806 and 1830 Baslow 1844 Bakewell 1852 and 1866 Pilsley My branch of the HIBBERT/HIBBERDs came to Australia in the 1860's. The available records do not contain many references to the family name at all. It appears they may have dropped down from space about 1730 and remained until the 1860's (primarily at Edensor) before blasting off again, leaving behind my ancestor who came to Australia. Could any of the more experienced Derbyshire researchers suggest any sources, etc., that may provide more information on the family. It appears they arrived in Derbyshire from places unknown in about 1730, remained for about 130 years, then disappeared again. Any assistance would be gratefully received. Regards Len Heyward Mooroolbark, Victoria, Australia

    3. Hi Rosemary, somebody else may beat me to it but otherwise I'll be happy to check for your HAWLEYs when I'm next at CLS which will be one day this coming week. However, I do need to mention that over the years cards from the Bestall's boxes have gone walkabout, unsurprisingly. I've had the same experience as you, finding gaps in dates where later I found entries in the PRs. As far as I'm aware, no-one has done a complete transcript of the entire PRs for St Mary's so we're left with the unfortunate reality that the original PRs have to be checked even though we have Bestall's index up to 1812. The good news I guess is that DRO are going to digitise all the PRs so Chesterfield St Mary should be accessible online one day. 3. Some time ago I managed to obtain photographs of all the HAWLEY entries from Bestall's Card Index of Chesterfield parish registers from the Local Studies Library. However, I have subsequently found several entries for HAWLEY/HAULEYs in FamilySearch which are not on the copies I have. Could some very kind soul have a look when they are at the library and see if I'm missing a card for 1638-1644? 3. I have found a need to look at marriages at Wilne from about 1770 to 1820. I'm interested in signatures and witnesses. Unfortunately the familysearch records for Wilne are all from the BT's so its no use hiring the films from Salt Lake. The DRO has the years I am after (with some gaps) in their PR catalogue. Can anybody tell me if they have the original PR's on microfiche or otherwise available for viewing? I remember viewing other PR's during a visit in 2010 and will be visiting Matlock again later this year. Cheers Darryl Sydney Australia

Hallo Original PRs are available on fiche. That has been the case as every record office I've visited. The LDS did them. I don't understand why they only have the BTs. I've been able to see the actual registers themselves when the image is too poor to be read. It is an archivist decision. Connie in London

    1. [DBY] HUDSON & SPENCER of Derby....plus BLACKHURST, GILL, ROACH & GRICE
    2. Andrea Newham
    3. Hello all It has taken twenty years but, with a little help from my friends, I've 'found' my Great-aunt Cis nee RATCLIFFE and husband Ted SPENCER in Vancouver, Canada. Not only that but beforehand I also uncovered 3 cousins and a sister who also emigrated, mainly to Ontario! One cousin Ada BLACKHURST nee RATCLIFFE, was lost on the Empress of Ireland disaster in 1914 coming back to Belper for a family visit. I've made contact with several 3rd cousins who are descendants of Elizabeth GILL nee RATCLIFFE, sister Ada (above) and cousin Arthur RATCLIFFE. My Great-Aunts Bertha HUDSON (dau of Thomas RATCLIFFE and Louisa nee BRADSHAW of Harrison St, Derby) married Edward Henry Hudson (son of William Herbert HUDSON and Selina nee ??) in 1900 and emigrated to Canada in Sept 1913 to join Edward with her 4 children. She died in February 1914 from pneumonia and her husband remarried Harriet JEWELL another expat. Child Henry Hudson died in a tragic accident involving a freight train in 1920 at the tender age of 8. I haven't found any living cousins to the surviving children Edward 1900, Leonard c1902 and Ethel c1904 but do have a copy of the wedding certicate of Leonard to Elsie ROACH 17/2/1928. Does anyone recognise the names?? As for Cis &Ted I NOW know that she was Emily RATCLIFFE (dau' of Thomas RATCLIFFE AND Louisa BRADSHAW) and she joined Edwin (!) SPENCER (son of Ernest SPENCER and Harriet nee GRICE also of Harrison St, derby) in Halifax, NS in March 1915 and married him the next day. They then seem to have settled in Brandon, Manitoba (1916 Canadian census) and I have record of Lawrence Gordon SPENCER being born there in Aug 1916. A daughter Edna was born sometime before this as I know she was the eldest. The family moved to BC sometime and I believe I've found Cis's death in Vancouver on 24/7/1949 aged a young 58. Two more children Gordon and Thelma were born and I believe I've found both boys in Vancouver in various voters lists. Does anyone recognise THESE names? In the course of these discoveries I've realised that the Ratcliffe family, children of William and Mary nee Nightingale suffered the loss of so many of their family in the course of the second decade of the 1900s! Bertha HUDSON 13 Feb 1914 -Toronto Ada BLACKHURST May 1914 - in sinking of Empress of Ireland Louisa RATCLIFFE Feb 1916 - Derby Infirmary William RATCLIFFE 14 Feb 1916, Flanders - son of Louisa and brother of Bertha and Cis Henry HUDSON May 1920 - Toronto ........just the ones I've pinned down so far! I know death was not an unusual visitor especially during the War but my ancestors must have wondered what they'd done to deserve such loss!! So there you have it! Please get in touch if you recognise any of the above families. Andrea Newham

    1. [DBY] Hannah COTTON nee PURSGLOVE, school mistress, Ashover
    2. Ruth J
    3. Searching for more information about Hannah PURSGLOVE born Goatcliff (1851 and 1861 Census) who married William COTTON in 1808 in Baslow and had 8 children by him in Ashover between 1811 and 1832. William died pre 1841. Hannah's occupation in the Censuses is given as 'School Mistress'. I understand that there was an endowed free-school for poor children, founded 1605, and '3 small schools' in Ashover at this time - according to 'Parochial Returns made to the Select Committee appointed to inquire into The Education of the Poor: 1818' in House of Commons Papers pub by Google Books. I've found in another volume (The English Cyclopedia: Geography, pub 1854) that a second school was built in Ashover by the Rector in 1846 for the education of girls. These school buildings could still be in existence. However, Hannah COTTON's name does not appear in Trade Directories or Gazeteers although the Headteacher in the endowed school is. Please, can anyone shed any light on education in Ashover in the mid 19thC? Is it likely that Hannah was teaching in her own 'Dames School'? I believe that Hannah COTTON may well have been buried in Ashover. She died in the JAS qr 1868. Have MIs been published on the web re Ashover? If she has a gravestone I might find a little more about her there. I have not found an obituary for her on The British Library newspaper website. I would welcome any further pointers. Ruth

    3. Hi Adele Hannah (b abt 1795 Monyash), daughter of Joseph BONSALL and his wife Elizabeth FARMER, was a niece of the Jane BONSALL who married Samuel OATES. Jane of course had a brother Joseph BONSALL who married Elizabeth WHITE -this couple, who feature frequently in the book 'Dear Sister' had a daughter Hannah born 1861. Hannah HAWLEY (b abt 1795 Monyash) married (1816 Bakewell) Peter BONSALL. This Peter BONSALL and the Jane BONSALL who married Samuel OATES were first cousins. I don't know how this Hannah, the wife of Peter BONSALL, was related to the Hannah HAWLEY who married (1850, Monyash) Thomas BONSALL. Maybe she was an aunt. ________________________________ From: Adele Pentony-Graham <porcupine07@gmail.com> To: derbysgen@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, 6 January 2013, 0:36 Subject: [DBY] hannah bonsall there was a lady with this name whose parents were Joseph and Elizabeth Bonsall...
