    3. Hi Marjorie, my thanks to you and the Society for posting these maps so the list members can have a look. I found a couple of small places my SPENCER family lived in, Bank Head and Low Leighton. They lived in these parts during and after the 1841 census. The hamlets were so small you can see in Low Leighton around six homes or farms houses. So I know at least one of them was their home. What amazes me is they are so isolated, I don't see any Calico factories near by and wondered how they got to work.  All my best  Mike Morris  Toronto Canada >________________________________ >> From: Marjorie Ward <marjorie.ward2@btinternet.com> >>To: DERBYSGEN@rootsweb.com >>Sent: Saturday, December 15, 2012 7:55:20 AM >>The New Mills Local History Society have recently added two very useful >>resources to their website. >> >>The 1841 Tithe Award Map - http://www.newmillshistory.org.uk/titheindex.html >>and a transcript of St. George`s Road Methodist Memorial Inscriptions - >>http://www.newmillshistory.org.uk/gyardindex.html <snip> >> >> >> > >

The information is only as good as the informant. If John believed he was born in Shirley, that's what he would have said. It may be he was born elsewhere and moved there when he was very young so having no memory of living somewhere else. Age at death would be given by someone who may not have known exactly how old John was so made a guestimate or was grieving so not able to remember as well as they might have under normal circumstances. Have you tried either Familysearch and/or FreeREG? > There is an interesting gap in the children of William DERBYSHIRE/ Ann > TITTERTON between1802 and 1808 bapt. at Shirley. They'd be worth checking out just in case one is your man. Also search a wider date range. Don't forget he may not have been baptised when he was still a babe in arms. He could have been several years old or only baptised just prior to his marriage. > Can I rashly assume that John’s bapt. was lost in the paperwork of Longford? You could but it might be better to note his likely year of birth/baptism with a rider that confirmation has not been possible to identify so far. Presumably you've tried different spellings and contractions such as DARBYSHIRE, DERBY, DARBY? The registers weren't made up at the time of the events. They could have been noted on a piece of paper, in a day book if the relevant parish had one or, worst of all, committed to memory. It's possible John was baptised in the expected parish but simply omitted which is not, of course, helpful for you. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

He married at North Wingfield in 1826 and had 3 children there before returning to Yeaveley/Shirley. There is an interesting gap in the children of William DERBYSHIRE/ Ann TITTERTON between1802 and 1808 bapt. at Shirley. I note that Fanny was bapt. at Edlaston in 1811. Could William and Ann have been away from Shirley when John was born in 1805? Page of 1805 of Longford P.R. is missing, but John DERBYSHIRE is not in the Longford BTs, or of Edlaston. Ann TITTERTON, the possible mother, is from Longford. There are other possible bapts. further afield. Can I rashly assume that John’s bapt. was lost in the paperwork of Longford? Bob Jennings.

The name is quite widespread and they were in Derbyshire long before the 1730s. You can search under the bride's surname as well. 3. Hi Rosemary, as I understand it the planned digitisation project goes beyond parish registers, but I believe it will start with those. The best info I've seen so far was in a DRO announcement forwarded to this list towards the end of last year, so if you search the list archives, you should find it. If I remember rightly, they said that the digitised records would ultimately be available online but didn't state which partner might/would be used for that (eg Ancestry, FMP etc). They were well aware that the big issue for digitisation is not the actual filming of records, which is relatively easy, but the accurate indexing of pages for searching purposes which is complex and time-consuming. In other words, there is no timeline or ETA yet for the project. I wasn't aware that the DRO were going to digitise *all* the parish registers. Do you know what their time scale is or what type of access they are planning?
