    1. [DBY] PETT in Hartington/Biggin
    2. Margaret Thackray
    3. Hi I have been trying to trace back the Pett family that lived in Biggin, Hartington Nether Quarter. I've got back as far as 1685, to a William Petty born in Hartington, married to Alice Hall, with children Elizabeth b1709, Ellen b 1712, Thomas b1715, Alice b 1719, William b 1723 and James b 1726. (I'm descended from Thomas) Can anyone suggest how I could find out about earlier generations? Pett/Petty is a common name in Kent and Cornwall, but not in Derbyshire! I have theorised that the family came north to find work, maybe in lead mining, but it is only a theory! Thanks Margaret ________________________________ From: Charani <charani.b@gmail.com> To: derbysgen@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, 19 May 2013, 12:10 Subject: [DBY] Brickwall Demolition - PQ OK, you proved me wrong last week :)) Anyone with surnames beginning with P or Q which they are stuck at? -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton,  Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to DERBYSGEN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Hello Jayne and Peter, It was very interesting to read about the Handleys, particularly as I have an almost direct connection. I knew for a long time from a list of mourners that my grand aunt Ada Holmes was married to someone by the name of Hudson but I had at that time no idea of his first names. Then I discovered that Ada's husband was George Vickers Hudson, the son of Benjamin Vickers Hudson and Eliza Hudson. I also read Jean Coulton's account of the murder, the following court case and his subsequent hanging in Derby Gaol. It is an extremely interesting article and I am pleased to say that I am only related-by-marriage to the whole grisly affair. 3. I see your problem, Peter. There's no obvious Isaac on the 1901 or 1911 censuses. As a miner, it might be that he was underground on the night of the census, so wasn't recorded. Or maybe just a stroppy individual who avoided census officials :-) Andy. 1. Re: [DBY] Brickwall Demolition - P for PEARSON
    2. Judy McCoy
    3. I am confused about a John PEARSON and an Ann PEARSON. 1841 census, Derby, DBY, Litchurch St. John PEARSON - Living with Samuel PEARSON family, age 15, born DBY. Samuel's mother (and John's mother?), Jane TOPLISS PEARSON (age 61) is living with them as well. Ann PEARSON - Living with Thomas PEARSON family, age 18, born DBY - Samuel and Thomas were brothers, living one family apart on Litchurch St., St. Peter's, Derby 1851 census, Derby, DBY, Litchurch St. John PEARSON - Now living with Thomas PEARSON family. John is identified as 'brother' of Thomas PEARSON. John, age 24, born Wirksworth. Ann PEARSON - Probably married. The PEARSON family in 1818, including young Thomas and Samuel, were removed from Ticknall where they were born, to Wirksworth, their father John's place of legal settlement (even though John's wife, Jane TOPLISS (married 1801, Calke), and all eight of their children up to 1818 had been born in Ticknall). 1861 Derby census, Litchurch St. John PEARSON, age 34, visitor with family of Thomas PEARSON. The problem. The family was removed to Wirksworth in 1818 as far as I know. I have the Removal papers and the Ticknall Parish Expenses tabulating the cost of the removal and payment to the man who supposedly accompanied them. No corresponding repayment from Wirksworth, though. And although I've searched John Palmer's excellent Wirksworth site for parish records and have viewed the FHL film for Wirksworth P.R.s of that period (1818-1830) I did not find a birth/baptism for John (c. 1826) or Ann (c. 1823) although Ann is not proven to be from Wirksworth. She may be the daughter of one of John Sr.'s siblings, but there are no Ann PEARSONs bapt. to any PEARSONs in 1822-1824 in Wirksworth. She also could have been born in Ticknall where her mother's people were. 1851 census searches don't help much as there are several married possibilities. The question. Did John and Jane PEARSON have two more children after they arrived (if they did) in Wirksworth? I think John, Sr., died in Wirksworth 04Apr1837. His son Thomas was already married and in Derby in 1835, so I think the various family members came to Derby after John, Sr.'s death. Thanks in advance for any ideas or information. Judy

I don't have records for Heanor) and in the Alfreton records I have son John born 1741 - this is the only child listed under William and Sarah - whether they had more children later I don't know... In the burials for Alfreton, there is no Sarah listed - I have checked f/s but I find some information not quite accurate - therefore if someone could 1. establish Sarah's baptism for me please and 2. her death most obliged Karen

    3. Hello folks, A picture of an 8 inch Ginger Jar raises some questions. (see www.wirksworth.org.uk/X646.htm) What was the jar used for? J.T.MARSH seems to have been a grocer and a tea dealer for 50 years. Could it have been a tea caddy? It would need a big cork. William MARSH calls himself "Bailiff for the Court of Requests". According to Wikipedia, the Court of Requests ended in the Civil War. Is Wikipedia wrong? Is the Census entry wrong? Anyone with legal knowledge know? Does anyone have a photo of Joseph MARSH 1834-1909? He seems to have had no offspring. Anyone have him in their family tree?
