Hi Di You could do worse than spend an hour or three reading Michael Spencer's Journeys, this one talks about his walk through the area of The Leys in Bonsall:- http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spire/journey/journey31.htm They will give you a feel for the area. The rest of his website is a mine of information, you just never know what you might find on there. http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm But you probably knew this anyway, just saying in case you didn't. Cheers....Dawn ©¿©¬ > Please does anyone know anything about this farm?
My Grandfather, WALTER ASH, lived with his family on Jackson Road or Jackson Torr in Matlock probably from 1889 (when he was born) to before 1911 when he moved to Smedley Street. I presume he went to Matlock County Junior School (now Castle View). Are there any school admission records online or does anyone have access to them? Or was there another school he would have attended. It's unlikely that as the son of a Methodist preacher he would have gone to the Catholic school! -- Rose Kelland www.rosescountryrose.blogspot.com www.livesandtimesofbella.blogspot.com
Previous refers It now seems likely that the area of my quest is centred on what was known as Phoenix Bridge, which crossed the canal at the junctions of Phoenix Street / Exeter Street to their junction with Nottingham Road. More importantly, it would seem that the former public house I was searching for was also on Phoenix Street, near it j with Exeter Street and Phoenix Bridge. Does anyone know the name of that Pub please? That whole area was flattened to make way for the new section of the Derby Inner Ring Road in the mid to late 1960s, after the formal closure of the Derby Canal in 1964. May I also that those who responded to my previous requests about this matter, to whom I am most grateful. Terry Wagg

Just to add In the late 1940s and into1950s Herbert Hardy also had a shop selling nylons etc in Crown Square at Matlock. Boys could look in the window to see the "forbidden" garments (I obviously averted my eyes) Peter On 13 Jul 2013, at 10:50, ann wrote: > > > Found this little article, > > > > > Darley Dale - Warney Mill > SK275624 Situated on the Warney Brook at Darley Dale the mill > operated until at least 1940. Found this little article, Darley Dale - Warney Mill SK275624 Situated on the Warney Brook at Darley Dale the mill operated until at least 1940. From 1891 to when it closed it was operated by James Walton & Co. The site is now owned by the DFS furniture store which was developed by Herbert Hardy. He lugged his suitcase from Darley Dale full of ladies stockings (and garments boys were not allowed to see) in the days before his enterprise grew into the DFS superstore. Not so long ago very few shops opened on Sunday because it was against the law to sell all but a limited range of goods and furniture wasn't on the permitted list. Around 1970 Herbert Hardy overcame this by a clever plan to sell furniture on a Sunday by offering a free three-piece suite to anyone who bought a bag of carrots as it was permitted to sell vegetables. The carrots just happened to be the same price on a Sunday as the suites were on weekdays. Aileen

Terry, You could try the Derby and Sandiacre Canal Society - they are rebuilding the canal on the original route as far as possible and have maps and all sorts of stuff. http://derbycanal.org.uk/ Good luck Andy Austen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Terance Wagg" <toshanco@btinternet.com> To: "Derbysgen" <derbysgen@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 11, 2013 3:39 PM Subject: [DBY] Former Derby Canal - Nottingham Road from St Mary's Bridge to Erasmus Street, Derby. >I am conducting research into the above in connection with one of my > 'brick walls' and I am having great difficulty in obtaining an OS Map of > that area pre 1964, when the canal was closed and the new inner ring > roads etc. were built over it, and thus obliterating all evidence of it! > > I am mainly interested in the bridges that were built across the canal > between those points and of any adjacent, or nearby Public Houses that > have now been destroyed. > > I would appreciate a copy of any old OS map or photographs of that area. > > Regards > > Terry Wagg > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > DERBYSGEN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Hi Terry, have you contacted Derby Local Studies? I'm pretty sure they will have a good collection of OS maps for Derby. I am conducting research into the above in connection with one of my 'brick walls' and I am having great difficulty in obtaining an OS Map of that area pre 1964, when the canal was closed and the new inner ring roads etc. were built over it, and thus obliterating all evidence of it! I am mainly interested in the bridges that were built across the canal between those points and of any adjacent, or nearby Public Houses that have now been destroyed. I would appreciate a copy of any old OS map or photographs of that area. Regards Terry Wagg

Hi Aileen Last year I came across a photo of a cottage in a Lancashire village that my g-grandfather died in. Fortunately, his death certificate gave the name of the cottage but the picture showed it in the middle of no-where. I did a Google search and found the Parish Council website. This had a page similar to these groups where people could communicate so I asked if anyone knew if the cottage was still standing and what its current address was. I got a couple of replies, one of which took a picture of how it looks now. With this in mind, try www.wirksworth.net. Click on 'History' on the blue line near the top of the page to see the heritage centre, and maybe contact them, or e-mail the photo to editors@wirksworth.net. Hope this helps. If it's a path, though, and not a road, there might not be a street view. As Nivard says, local knowledge might be helpful. I've done the opposite- starting from a census address & looking for the house now on street view. All the while hoping the numbering system hasn't changed! Margaret

Hello Dave I am just checking the Rootsweb archives to see what I have missed whilst I have been away and have come across your query re Samuel BARBER. Do you know from the census where Samuel was born? My GGrandmother was Mary BARBER who married James HOLLINGWORTH. She was born in Chapel en le Frith near the border with Glossop parish. She had a brother Samuel (too young for your ancestor) and an uncle with the name. best wishes Marjorie Ward Derbyshire, UK Sources for Disley; Lyme Handley; Taxal & Whaley www.disley.net Sources for Hollingworths www.hollingworths.net Sources for NWDby incl Chapel; Charlesworth; Chinley; Fernilee; Glossop; Hayfield; Hope Valley; Mellor & New Mills http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dusk John Ward Paintings: www.johnward-art.com
