Hello I have found a record of a will for William Naylor, died 1899 in Derbyshire. I am not sure if this is my great great grandfather as of yet, but how would I go about finding a copy of his will? Many thanks
If you have found this in the probate registry index you can send for the will. The cost is £6 and the address is Postal Searches and Copies Department Leeds District Probate Registry York House York Place Leeds LS1 2BA for more info see http://www.justice.gov.uk/courts/probate/copies-of-grants-wills Rob -----Original Message----- From: Mrs Watson <familytree29@hotmail.com> To: derbysgen-l <derbysgen-l@rootsweb.com> Sent: Mon, Dec 3, 2012 11:05 pm Subject: [DBY] Finding a copy of a will Hello I have found a record of a will for William Naylor, died 1899 in Derbyshire. It's a good question Marjorie and I don't know the answer. I did see the plans for the place back when the refurb started but I can't remember anything about the parking. I'm sure DRO will release all that kind of info once the opening date nears. Do you know whether the car parking will be the same Celia? Marjorie Ward Derbyshire, UK
Hi Rob, microfilms for Derbys PRs are currently held at the County Local Studies in Matlock rather than the DRO, which doesn't have room for the films in its temporary premises, so unless someone from the list pops up saying they are going to CLS, I would recommend contacting the library directly, as I believe they will do that lookup for you. Contact details here: http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/local_studies/local_studies_libraries/county_hall_local_studies/ It's probably a good idea for everyone who's planning a visit to DRO to be aware that they, and the County Local Studies, will both be completely closed from 21 December until 12 February - they have just announced this on the DRO blog (http://recordoffice.wordpress.com/). During the closure they will be moving their combined resources into the newly refurbished and extended building on New Street in Matlock so from 12 Feb there will be an exciting new research experience for us all - with a cafe too!! So the closure is disappointing but with a good result in store, we hope. I should have said the Parish is Holloway :) Rob
Would anybody be going to DRO who could check a marriage for me please. Ethell HUDSON married John GILBERT on 26th Dec 1914. I remember from when I found this marriage that John had no father listed however I cannot find the notes I had taken at the time and am in need of knowing who the witnesses are. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I wont be able to get to DRO until the new year Many thanks Rob

Good evening My ancestor Will Naylor of Bakewell was sentenced to three months hard labour in Feb 1897 for an assault on his wife in December of the previous year. He was not present at his conviction, and it was believed he had gone to America. I can't find any record of him leaving the UK however. He had returned to Bakewell by January 1898 as his son was born in Sept 1898. So, how do I find out if he actually went to prison, as he was certainly sentenced. Thank you Janie

The recently deceased could earn a "nice" living for the body snatchers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_snatching Probably the most famous body snatchers were Burke and Hare, two Irishmen who took the supply of fresh corpses to a new level - they murdered. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burke_and_Hare_murders http://burkeandhare.com/bhperps.htm There's also a book, "The Italian Boy" by Sarah Wise about the murder and body snatching of a boy in London. It's good book and worth getting hold of a copy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Burkers <www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/reviews/the-italian-boy-by-sarah-wise-6166226.html> -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk

Hi Wendy Most likely for dissection in medical schools There was an act passed to licence those schools in 1832 There was not enough bodies from capital punishment so the "resurrection men" liberated a few from graveyards for a price Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/11/2012 18:08, WendyE Gorlick wrote: > Hi: > I'm just catching up on a backlog of emails. > > I was looking at: HOPE BURIALS 1831 Jun-Dec. on the list was "2 Oct 1831, Benjamin WRAGG Bradwall 21, this body stolen" and later in the same list "26 Oct 1831, William BRADWALL Smaldale 28, this body stolen same night" i had to wonder what might be the primary reasons for stealing a body/bodies in this time period?
