Hello Charani, Thank you for the information. So, it doesn't seem so unusual for a child to be baptised around the time of the death of a parent. Will keep searching. Today, 30 Jan, in 1848 was a Sunday when many/most baptisms took place. It was most likely the baptisms were already arranged. I had a similar situation with a family. It was because the father was a non conformist and the mother wasn't of the same persuasion. So, as soon as he'd been buried, she took the first opportunity to have the children, in her eyes, properly baptised in the right church. I didn't know he was even married until he was buried! On more than one occasion, I've seen the burial of a parent take place on the same day as the baptism of the child. -- Charani (UK) OPC for Walton, Ashcott, Shapwick, Greinton and Clutton, SOM http://wsom-opc.org.uk
Hello Carole Glossop early registers are on my website and they too give Richard`s birth place as Torside. I have a CD of the MIs for Hayfield but there are no CROMPTONS mentioned. I am sure someone who knows Glossop will tell you where Torside is. best wishes Marjorie Ward Derbyshire, UK Sources for Disley; Lyme Handley; Taxal & Whaley www.disley.net Sources for Hollingworths www.hollingworths.net Sources for NWDby incl Chapel; Charlesworth; Chinley; Fernilee; Glossop; Hayfield; Hope Valley; Mellor & New Mills http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dusk John Ward Paintings: www.johnward-art.com
I can't help with Richard CROMPTON's burial I'm afraid but can supply a couple of general points. I think the biggest employer at Torside in 1819 would have been Vale House Mill (cotton). I don't think there was paper making there. Otherwise people would be employed in farming. The area is underneath the Longdendale reservoirs now. Did Richard actually die at Hayfield or in Hayfield registration district (which includes Glossop). There was paper making in the Strines/New Mills/Hayfield area but there was also paper making at Turn Lee Mills in Whitfield township of Glossop. As a guess, the baptisms may have happened because of involvement with the church for the funeral and the vicar realising that the children hadn't been baptised. Graham
Hello listers, I'm back after an absence due to researching other branches of my husband's family tree. I still haven't found the burial place of Richard CROMPTON baptised 1819 at Glossop. On IGI his place of birth is given as Torside. Death certificate says he died on 27th January 1848 at Hayfield, age 28. Cause of death: fever not certified. His occupation was Papermaker. His father was John CROMPTON, also a Papermaker and his mother Sarah (?TAYLOR). He married Mary CASTLE at All Saints, Marple in 1840 I have found the burial of his wife, Mary in 1891, age 74, of Dinting Lane, and some of their family at Glossop Cemetery but I have searched and can't find him. From 1851 census till her death in 1891 Mary lived at Dinting. In 1841 census he was living at Chapel en le Frith, papermaker, born this county. His surname is transcribed as CRAMPTON. I have found a marriage for John CRAMPTON and Sarah TAYLOR at Glossop in 1815. Are these his parents?. His child Ann, was born in Spain in 1844 and baptised at Villalgo and was also was baptised at Glossop in 1848. I believe that Richard and his wife went to Spain to be involved in the setting up of a papermaking factory. As you can see the family were in the Glossop area for quite a while. Strangely, two of his children were baptised in Parish Church, Glossop on 30th January 1848 - three days after he died! 1.Can someone tell me why this might have happened so soon after their father's death? 2. Can someone tell me anything about Torside? Was there a papermill in that area at this time? 3. Does anyone have a clue as to where Richard might be buried? Many thanks for reading my posting, Carole Noden, Kent, UK

Back after being absent for quite some time. I am trying to find where some family members are buried Thomas DRING and wife Sarah Ann were living in Codnor in 1891 & 1901 in 1911 they were in Heanor, Thomas was a Miner the 1911 census says they has 14 children 6 living The two oldest Harriet Ellen & Elizabeth Ann I believe died in Codnor, I have searched the available cemetery records that the LDS library has without finding where the 8 deceased children are buried, FreeBMD has many deaths of children in the Basford District, but it is impossible to say whose they are. I have identified 8 of the 14 children, but would like to find the othe 6 I understand that the Codnor church burial ground was full by the 1870's. Afternoon all A query on one of my Lea Mills men in WWI I have John H Beresford, served 3rd Batt Norfolk Reg 14298. He joined up 16/02/17 aged 20. George was fairly meticulous in his research but I cannot find any mention in the records of this. Military Medals are a problem ! Regards Peter
Marjorie, This morning I spoke to a friend who lives at Strawberry Hill which is at the (old) Derbyshire end of Roman Bridge and used to be called Upper Windy Bottom Farm. He told me that it was occupied by Samuel OLDKNOW's land agent at the time. Your explanation seems to be correct. Eric
Hi peter - I have John Henry Beresford in my tree - he was my great grandfather born 1848. I have his parents as Henry Beresford and Rachel Fearn but this may be wrong. He had a son also named John Henry who was born in 1880 so it may be the one you are looking at. His mother was Harriett Haynes. I keep meaning to join the Beresford Society as they have the entire tree confirmed. Let me know if you need any more help. Anne PS I have a photo! -----Original Message----- From: Peter Patilla Sent: Wednesday, January 23, 2013 11:21 AM To: Derbysgen Derbyshire Subject: [DBY] John H Beresford & William Broomhead Afternoon all A query on one of my Lea Mills men in WWI I have John H Beresford, served 3rd Batt Norfolk Reg 14298. Hello to the list I am trying to find a will for William POPE the date given is 1508 and he is of Shirley Aileen
Hello Eric The reason I thought all the properties belonged to Sam OLDKNOW is because in all I have read about the period and area I have not come across another one. I have just looked at Cheshire Registers on FMP and he is the only Marple one mentioned. Disappointingly his will wasn`t there. best wishes Marjorie Ward Derbyshire, UK Sources for Disley; Lyme Handley; Taxal & Whaley www.disley.net Sources for Hollingworths www.hollingworths.net Sources for NWDby incl Chapel; Charlesworth; Chinley; Fernilee; Glossop; Hayfield; Hope Valley; Mellor & New Mills http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dusk John Ward Paintings: www.johnward-art.com
