    1. [DBY] Free Strathclyde University course 'Genealogy: Researching Your Family Tree'
    2. Nick Higton via
    3. I found this course via an article in July's Family tree magazine, and thought it might be of some interest, particularly to newer researchers. It's a free online course 'Genealogy: Researching Your Family Tree' by University of Strathclyde on FutureLearn, and starts from today. https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/genealogy?utm_campaign=Share+Links&utm_medium=futurelearn-run_details&utm_source=email I've signed up for the course, which apparently takes 4 hours per week over 6 weeks. It starts from basics, but I'm hoping there will be both some tune-up tutorials and also more advanced stuff.

    3. This information relates mainly to Nathan Hubbersty Junior. He was born at Wirksworth on 01 Sep 1803, and baptised at St Mary’s on 06 Jan 1804. He was the son of the Rev. Nathan Hubbersty, who was Head Master of the Grammar School, Wirksworth, Derbyshire, and Mary Dorothy, daughter of Philip Tomlinson. He attended Sedbergh School, and entered Cambridge University, St John’s College, on Oct. 22, 1821. He graduated B.A. 1829; and M.A. 1830. He was ordained a deacon on 05 Jul 1829; and a priest on 11 Jul 1830. He was appointed assistant curate at Kniveton DBY in 1829, and was Perpetual Curate of Dethick and Alderwasley 1839-60. He became a schoolmaster at Wirksworth Free Grammar School in 1829, and was Headmaster 1832-51. He married, on 21 Jun 1838 at Wirksworth, Margaret Emma, daughter of Richard Hurt, of The Hall, Wirksworth, and had issue. He lived latterly at Eastwell, near Melton Mowbray LEI, and died 03 Oct 1881 in Wirksworth to where he had, presumably, retired (Wirksworth.org.uk says 02 Oct 1881). He was buried on 06 Oct 1881 in Wirksworth churchyard. My 3 x great uncle, Paul Higton, was Nathan Junior's servant/gardener in Wirksworth, followed him when he moved to Eastwell, and returned with him to Wirksworth. He never married. ------ Original Message ------ From: "Rose Kelland" <[email protected]> To: "Derbyshire list" <[email protected]> Sent: 05/07/2016 22:45:42 Subject: [DBY] Wirksworth burial registers - JOSHUA GREGORY >Whoever Rev N HUBBERSTY (?) was at St Mary's church in Wirksworth, he >did a >good job of recording some of the burials! > >I'm paging through FamilySearch's registers online and although this >person >is not in my own family tree, I can only imagine the wealth of >information >that can be gleaned from the comments: > >JOSHUA GREGORY of MIddleton was buried on 17th May 1813 and was 60 >years >old. >Rev HUBBERSTY added in the following > comments: >"N.B. 2. Caren Wilcox via
    3. It is very interesting to me to see the Gregory family mentioned in the group email. The name Joshua Gregory goes back into the 1600s in the Gregory family in the Eyam area. My Gregory relatives started to move from Derbyshire to the Manchester area in late 1700s/early 1800s and I have not followed collateral relationships into the 1800s. Thank you for posting about this Joshua Gregory. Caren Wilcox

    3. I appreciate seeing some information about the Gregory's on the site. The name Joshua goes back into the 1600s in the family in Eyam. My Gregory relatives moved from Derbyshire in the late 1700s and early 1800s to Manchester area and I have not pursued the Gregory family in later decades. It is always great to see the name however. Thanks

    3. Hi Nick - interesting comment about Nathan Hubbersty and the Hall, Wirksworth. The Hurt family actually lived at Alderwasley Hall which is now a school. Not sure if Richard Hurt also owned the hall at Wirksworth. My great aunt Sarah - Sarah Anne Conway, nee Slack worked for the Hurt family at the hall as a maid and in fact was the one who laid out the last two surviving members of the family before the house was sold. I love reading these historical stories about Wirksworth families. 1. [DBY] surname TUNNICLIFFE
    2. Keith Jeffery via
    3. Greetings, I'm trying to find the birth and parentage of one Thomas TUNNICLIFFE, born about 1807, possibly in the border region of Derby/Staffs. He married Hannah RICHARDSON at St Michaels, Coventry on 18 Feb 1827. In 1841 he was living at Spon Street, Coventry with Hannah and a fair sized brood. In 1841, he and his family embarked for New Zealand on the Clifford, arriving in Nelson in early 1842. The IGI has a birth of Thomas TUNNICLIFFE at Repton, christened 14 Dec 1806. A family tree says that he was born at Ashbourne. I've not had the PR searched for the years of interest (1805-1810). His death entry says that he was 75 at death in 1882 which indicates a birth year of around 1807. The death entry also says that he was born in Warwickshire, however the 1841 census has N for the born in county bit. This person is the ancestor of my father in law and is one of my major stonewalls. I'd really like to resolve this, as my father in law is now 87 years old. If anyone can assist, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all very kindly, Keith Jeffery

    3. The Gravel can be another name for renal colic or kidney stones. According to my district nurse with the morphine needle the pain I had is akin to childbirth. She had had both. Bob.

I have tried the mapping facility and although I like the concept, and know its in beta, try as I might I can't get very far with it My grandfather was in the RASC so very difficult to track, but others in specific battalions in regiments get a wide variety of apparently Trying to search for a man to see if this mapping feature is attached to the record just gets the prompt to pay to subscribe So whilst it seems to be a good idea its either not working yet or you have to pay From what I have seen of the site they don't have enough over and above what is available on other sites to subscribe Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/06/2016 09:24, Joan M via wrote: > This may be of interest to anyone who had a member of their family fighting > in WW1 - War Forces Records has launched an interactive troop map which is > free to use from today until July 3rd.
