I received the email today to say that I was now eligible for the free upgrade so took the plunge! It was a scary at first as I thought it wasn't going to work but just left it alone for half an hour, came back to the computer and all finished. The only thing that took a bit of time to work out, was how to get the tile onto the computer but it simply appeared on its own eventually. So 'mission accomplished'! Thank you to all of you who offered advice and support, as always much appreciated. A slight correction to Margaret's input. The GRO indexes are searchable in 5 year slices (any year +/-2 ) e.g 1845 +/2 = 1843-1847 inclusive. Eric Millward
Hi Christine, That's a brother. Based on the bible he was born on the 24th August and was then buried on the 26th. However both the birth and death are registered and in the GRO index. Hi Joan If the family (in the person of the person who wrote the names in the Bible) didn't know the name of the child, doesn't that imply there was never a name and that the child was stillborn? I've looked at cemetery records and from time to time, there are quite a number of entries with 'stillborn' as the only name. Your query might be unanswerable.. Thank you everybody for your input and help. Unfortunately I don't have access to the Kirk Ireton parish records so can't check if there is a still born burial around that date and also I don't have access to FMP at the moment although I have done a search and no records are showing. I do have the baptisms for all the other siblings so it looks as if there is no baptism either. I'm almost sure that a first name would have been added in if one was ever given. I fear it will remain a mystery!! Joan -----Original Message----- From: Joan M [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 03 February 2017 15:38 To: 'Derbyshire genealogy' Subject: Can't find birth or death Hi, In a family bible I have a child called 'baby' WHEELDON, born 31 Mar 1845, father Edwin WHEELDON and mother Mary Hannah HEAPY married 1843 and living in the Kirk Ireton/Ireton Wood area. However I can't find either a birth or death registration and there is no mention in the 1851 census, just his brother John Heapy WHEELDON. Is there any reason that a birth/death isn't registered - the GRO index has all subsequent siblings who were listed on the bible page. Thanks Joan
Hi Maree Thanks for your support and useful suggestion. The Catherine you refer to was baptised 1802 in Snelston and is the daughter of George Gadsby and Catherine. They baptised 11 children between the years 1778 and 1802. Snelston is only a few miles from Cubley so it is worth looking there. We have the name Catherine in this family but the d.o.b. does not fit. I previously assumed Catharine Gadsby c1776 Cubley was widowed (because of her age when she married Thomas Dickin). Having said that I cannot find a marriage record to support this and my DNA test does not support it either. My brick wall still stands even with the support of modern science! Thanks Stephen Burns
Hi Joan As there is no birth reg or death reg, it suggests the child may have been a stillborn Stillbirths were not officially recorded until 1927 The non naming also might suggest it didn't survive Have you checked the parish registers, I have found plenty recorded as stillborn in the burials, but it does vary by parish as to whether they were recorded It was the early days of civil registration so its possible both birth and death were missed but usually one or other was done Or a clerical error means it wasn't passed to the GRO or was but mistranscribed But my money would be on a stillbirth Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 04-Feb-17 10:27 AM, meg--- via DERBYSGEN wrote: > > Hi, > > In a family bible I have a child called 'baby' WHEELDON, born 31 Mar 1845, > father Edwin WHEELDON and mother Mary Hannah HEAPY married 1843 and living > in the Kirk Ireton/Ireton Wood area.
