To Bob, Annette, Meg, Brett and Ruth - thank you all for your time in deciphering this entry. I'm inclined to go with "Ould Woodhouse['s] wife was buried" - with an awkward O and the upstroke of the d crossing the l. Thank you all again, Rosemary On 06/05/2017 18:40, Rosemary Probert via DERBYSGEN wrote: > I'm asking for help again reading Dronfield Parish Register: > > https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DYDV-K3?mode=g&i=107&cc=1911752 > > > 18 Apr 1622 > .... I would disagree, and think that his handwriting is fairly consistent, at least compared with many parish registers that I've seen from this time period. In my view the first character of the word is a capital "O." Compare it with the similar character written on the next page, the entry for 26th May, which I believe reads "The wife of John Owtrem was buried ..." So, I think the first word is indeed "Ould," so "Ould Woodhouse['s] wife buried." If like me you have multiple family tree tabs open then I always seem to end up closing one down rather than going to it. To recover the tab then it's control, shift and t and it will reopen the tab where you were. Joan
Hello Rosemary, The four letters you are struggling to decipher are *O u l d*, See the backward stroke of the *d* again in *Woodhouse* although the vicar/curate uses the more modern form of the letter *d* in the word *buried*. He uses the backward stroke again and again when writing the word *daughter* - but not always. So Bob's theory is correct. Ruth
I agree the letter doesn't look quite like other Gs but neither does it look much like any other letter! The vicar is inconsistent in how he records things but does not seem to use a possessive apostrophe, i.e. it is always wife of, son of, etc so I don't think is says 'xxx Whoodhouses wife' which would imply it is a woman's name rather than a man's and the wife bit just gives her status as opposed to widow, which someone else has against their name. Sorry can't help more. I am part way through a Webinar series by the National archives on reading old documents and everybody so far has done all the right things to sort it out but this vicar seems determined to make it hard for you. Good luck. Evening All, I'm still working my way through Dronfield registers - which are really rather easy to read if only I was more proficient with the script :-) The last entry in December 1638: Does it say: Three Infants children of Richard MOODIE were buried the xxixth day ? Hi Joan, Sorry - but no. WOOODHOUSEes only turn up in my tree when Elizabeth married James MARPLES in 1632. She was one of Edmond's daughter and my 10x great grandmother.
