In the spring of 2000, I spent time at the Delaware Historical Society on Market Street in Wilmington, DE. I copied all data pertaining to the surname Rutter from the Wilmington Directories. The earliest entries I show are from the year 1857 and from that date on, there were entries almost every year. My notes also indicate that I checked directories for the years 1814 and 1853. As I recall, prior to 1857, there were several books which were done on a one-time basis but were not part of a series as the later ones were. The most recent notes I have are from 1950. The family still lived in Wilmington at that time so I'm assuming that was the end of the series. Information given was: Full name of head of household, occupation of head of household, employer of head of household, and home address. Sample entry: William J. Rutter, car builder, P.W.& B.R.R., h. 1315 King Street. Occasionally, the name of the wife was also given. Also, if the person was a boarder at that street address, he was indicated as such.
