    1. "Turf and Twig" custom
    2. Several times Carol Garnett's new book "New Castle County Land Records 1770-1777" mentions 'Turf and Twig" and I found quick reference for it's use from Mass to Va.. From England- There are many Commoners in Malmesbury, all descendants of men who fought for King Athelstan at the Battle of Brunanburg in 937. AD. Athelstan, the Saxon King of Wessex, gave the men of Malmesbury a share of 700 acres of land as a reward for their part in the defeat of the Danes. They could farm or graze animals on this land. The right to become a Commoner was passed down from father to son, and a ceremony is still held when a Malmesburian becomes a Commoner. He has to stand on a piece of turf from the common and is hit on the back with a hazel stick while someone says "Turf and twig I give to thee, as King Athelstan gave to me." He then receives a share of the annual rent on the land, but ceases to be a Commoner if he moves out of Malmesbury. The Malmesbury Commoners meet several times a year in the Old Courthouse.

    2. I suppose I'm a distant cousin. I'm from the Swedish Lutherian minster Lock,of about 1650-55,and his son,Andrew Lock, who died of a rattlesnake bite on the NJ bank about 1710. Thru the minister's young 2nd wife, the dau of Mans Lom,you're related to many Swedes,as she had 6 sisters who married.

    2. Spent an afternoon last week at the new Delaware Archives building. What a beautiful place. Wish I had had more time there. Did find a hand written letter from the rector of Trinity (Old Swede's) Church listing the marriage of Mary Jane Magens to Milo Locke on Oct. 14, 1856. They had 2 children Clara b. 1857 and William M. b.1860. Clara married John Moon in 1893. Interested in finding descendants. Margery Magens Huemmler

    1. Obit of deceased father fot the son placed for adoption
    2. List, I received the following request which I cannot do. Is there a kind soul out there who would like to help Norm? If you are interested please e-mail him at: normanc@mcpheeusa.com <<Hi Helen, You have helped me in the past with sending out messages to the Rootweb list people. I wondered if you might be able to research an obituary for me??? I have found out my Birth parents names and unfortunately my B-father is deceased. Harold William Gilger was born Jan 28 1943 and he died in March of 1973 His wife is Ruth Marlean (Hobbs) Gilger -- They have three children I was their forth - but was placed for adoption. They were living in Chester when I was born. (1966) That is all I know. I wondered if you lived in the Chester area if you would/could research at a library the actual obituary as it was printed in the Chester Times. I believe they changed the name of the paper to Delaware County Times. But I'm not sure what name it was in 1973. Anyhow, I found out that the Widener Library would probably have it. I called and they said that they wouldn't search for me that I had to come in. I live in CT and it would be about 3 1/2 hour drive for me. I am seriously considering getting down there...but thought of you. If I am asking too much, please let me know. Greatly appreciate your help. Norm>> Thank you! :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

    1. 28 Mar 1904 -- Chester Times (new rules on naturalization)
    2. Hi list, I came across this info in the Delaware County Daily Times, in the 100 Years Ago section. 28 Mar 1904 -- Chester Times After the new rules of the court go into effect the first Monday of April, it will not be easy for a foreigner to secure naturalization papers in the county. The new rules are strict on this question and the applicant must clearly prove that he is entitled to become a citizen of the Untied States before the right can be conferred upon him. The most important change in the rules is that requiring each person who desires to become a citizen of the United States to be represented by a lawyer, a member of the Delaware County Bar. The applicant also must be a bona fide resident of this county for at least six months immediately preceeding (sic), his application. This will bar outsiders coming into the county just to be made citizens. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

    1. Sharpless Reunions -- picture?
    2. Good morning list, A friend of mine sent me this query -- I don't have an answer for him but if anyone can help him, please e-mail Reece THOMAS at TPinballnut@aol.com Last Tuesday night Wm. Bunce Auctioneer had a framed group picture \of the 1882 Reunion of the SHARPLESS family taken at SHARPLESS Rock. I guess it was in 1982 I attended the 300th reunion festivities held at Weidner College. Among the items on display was another large group picture of a later than 1882 vintage that someone had numbered most of the people in the photo and cross referenced then in an accompanying notebook. Are you familiar with what I am describing? If so, do you know who has possession of this historical gem. My interest is that my great grandfather and great grandmother and his brother Barclay Thomas are identified in this picture. It really would be great with today's digital cameras to be able to take a picture of them for my family's record. Reece Thomas TPinballnut@aol.com Thank you! :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

    1. [NewCastle] McCullough family research
    2. Dear Tina, While doing a routine search for McCullough in a Chester County rootsweb site, I discovered a message you wrote about one of your family lines (not McCullough). However, you indicated you were researching Mccullough. I, too, am researching McCulloughs. I'm not sure where all of their PA locations were; I know that their DE and MD locations were all very near the intersection of DE/PA/MD. Dear everyone else, See anyone who looks familiar? Karen Carter Minneapolis, MN I have Enoch McCullough, d. Mar 2, 1827, near Newark, DE. He and his wife Elizabeth (unknown) were the parents of: A. Oliver McCullough: b. Nov. 19, 1798, PA; d. July 6, 1878 near Elkton in train accident; bur. North East, MD. Oliver was married twice -- first wife, unknown names, had four children (I've only documented Enoch Lewis); second wife was named Elizabeth. It is possible her last name was Leader as per the assertions of a now deceased researcher whose research appears lost. He reported they were married Oct. 30, 1828, White Clay Creek Hundred, DE. They had 7 children (possibly 8, but not probable). Kids with first wife: Catherin/Catherine Ann, b. 6-6-1822 Enoch Lewis, b. 10-21-1823, MD; d. 4-8-1888, Wilmington, DE; m. Rebecca Foster Their kids: Robert, George, Elizabeth, Oliver, Amanda, Lewis Wesley, Norris. Levina, b. 12-22-1825 Susan Ann, b. 10-23-1827 ___________ Kids with Elizabeth (possibly Leader) Andrew Jackson, b. 2-25, 1830; m. Elizabeth Bristow Their kids: Andrew J., Eugenia, Rudolph. Elizabeth, b. 7-4-1832, PA; m. John Buckley. Jethro J., b. 7-5-1834, PA; m. Sarah Naile William H., b. 4-7-1836, PA; d. 12-29-1908, NY; mar. Ann Ellena Cloud, b. DE Their kids: Samuel R., William B., Joseph Winfield, Addie E., Henry/Harry Disston, Francis D., Lula S., Mabel E., Clayton J. Hannah Mary (prob. same person as Ann listed in one census), b. 3-7-1938, MD; d. 1908, MD; mar. George Wilson. Their kids: Thomas S. and Cyrus D. Ann (probably is Hannah -- listed in 1850 census when Hannah was not; ages same. Without Hannah being listed, not likely to be Hannah's twin.) Oliver J., b. 10-6-1842, MD; d. 9-17-1862, Antietam, MD (battle field death) Winfield Scott, b. 6-17-1846, DE; d. 9-22-1920, PA; mar. Nancy McDowell. Their kids: Minnie May, Jennie Isabell, Oliver Wilson, Charles Scott, Ellen Mary, Bessie Scott, Howard Purvis. B. Jethro J. (maybe Johnson) McCullough, b. 3-8-1810, DE; d. 5-25-1878; bur. MD; mar. Elizabeth Tull. Their children: E. Frisby, b. 10-17-1834, PA; d. 8-11-1852, prob. MD; bur. MD. Enoch M., b. 8-8-1836, PA; d. 2-21-1920, bur. MD.; mar. Rebecca E. Killingsworth. Their kids: Ella Wakeman; Bertha; Florence E.; E. Curtis; J. Jay; Oliver Perry. George W., b. 11-4-1838, PA; mar. Mary A. (unknown) Jethro Tull, b. 6-30-1841; MD; d. 3-10-1895, MD; bur: MD; mar. in New London, PA, Jane Ann Mace, b. 1837-38, OH; d. 2-24-1927. John W., b. 12-6-1843, DE; m. Margaret Rebecca Hindman. Their child: Russell Hindman McCullough. Francina A., b. 6-16-1845, DE; d. 8-27-1883, (visiting) Asbury Park, NJ (living in DE) mar. E. J. Mulhausen. They had one child: Louis Mulhausen. Isaac S., b. 3-20-1847, d. 9-9-1866, bur. MD Charles W., b. 3-14-1851; d. 11-10-1877; mar. Annie (unknown) Their kids: Harry Eldridge; Clarence Osborn James R., b. 3-14-1951; d. 9-6-1851 Samuel Delaplaine, b. 8-29-1855, MD; d. 1915, MD; mar. Sarah Emma Martindale. Their kids: Ethel E., Carrie E., Margaret, George W., Nettie Ray. NOTE: I think there is a high likelihood that Enoch and Elizabeth McCullough could have had other children since there is such a large gap between the birth years of the two know children, Oliver and Jethro.
