    1. Re: Jacob Fellman, b 1837 Bavaria
    2. Dear Lori, Have you checked the Wilmington City Directories? I know there are copies of some or all of them in the Delaware Archives in Dover, DE, and in the Delaware Historical Society (or is it Historical Society of Delaware?) in Wilmington, DE. Of course, it is also highly possible that the LDS Library might have film of them. Those directories list the names of the working people in a household (generally the men in a family), their places of business, their home addresses, and often their business addresses. 1. RE: WWII US Army enlistment records
    2. Dear Marj (and others whose searches of this interesting database may have failed), Like you, Marj, I knew all of the information needed to fill all of the blanks on the search form when I decided to search for my father -- just as you did when you did your search. When I put it all in and conducted my search, like you, I came up with nothing. So, I tried eliminating information. When I finally got down to last name, state of residence, and county of residence, I found my dad, my uncle and two of their cousins. In this case, apparently, less information actually is better. 1. Re: [PACHESTE] Re: [PA-QUAKERS] Any Day(e) researchers?
    2. Hi, folks. I had a couple of inquiries for more information about the statement I made that the intersection region of DE, MD, and PA was quite a small region, so I figured the best way to demonstrate that would be to show the actual miles between population centers. I used maps.yahoo to get the distances listed below. First, I picked three or four population centers that were major in each of the three states. All of the MD locations are in Cecil Co., MD; all of the DE locations are in New Castle Co., DE. The three PA locations are in Chester Co. (West Chester), Delaware Co. (Chester), and Philadelphia Co., (Philadelphia) North East, MD, to Elkton, MD, is 7.2 mi. North East, MD, to Rising Sun, MD, is 9.5 mi. Rising Sun, MD, to Elkton, MD, is 15.1 mi. Newark, DE, to Wilmington, DE, is 16.9 mi. Newark, DE, to New Castle, DE, is 11.7 mi. New Castle, DE, to Wilmington, DE, is 6.5 mi. Chester, PA, to West Chester, PA, is 17.8 mi. Chester, PA, to Philadelphia, PA, is 15.6 mi. West Chester, PA, to Philadelphia, PA is 35.5 mi. Now for the cross-state miles: North East, MD, to Newark, DE, is 15.6 mi. North East, MD, to Wilmington, DE, is 28 mi. North East, MD, to New Castle, DE, is 22.8 mi. North East, MD, to West Chester, PA, is 43.4 mi. North East, MD, to Chester, PA, is 41.5 mi. North East, MD, to Philadelphia, PA, is 56.1 mi. Elkton, MD, to Newark, DE, is 7.8 mi. Elkton, MD, to Wilmington, DE, is 20.4 mi. Elkton, MD, to New Castle, DE, is 16 mi. Elkton, MD, to West Chester, PA, is 35.8 mi. Elkton, MD, to Chester, PA, is 34 mi. Elkton, MD, to Philadelphia, PA, is 48.5 mi. Rising Sun, MD, to Newark, DE, is 17.1 mi. Rising Sun, MD, to Wilmington, DE, is 32.8 mi. Rising Sun, MD, to New Castle, DE, is 29.5 mi. Rising Sun, MD, to West Chester, PA, is 35 mi. Rising Sun, MD, to Chester, PA, is 47 mi. Rising Sun, MD, to Philadelphia, PA, is 63.5 mi. Newark, DE, to Philadelphia, PA, is 45 mi. Newark, DE, to Chester, PA, is 30.5 mi. Newark, DE to West Chester, PA, is 27.8 mi. Wilmington, DE, to Philadelphia, PA, is 29. 5 mi. Wilmington, DE, to Chester, PA, is 14.4 mi. Wilmington, DE, to West Chester, PA, is 16.3 mi. New Castle, DE, to Philadelphia, PA, is 35.3 mi. New Castle, DE, to Chester, PA, is 20.8 mi. New Castle, DE, to West Chester, PA, is 24.5 mi. Okay, there are probably some combination of the 3 cities in 3 states that I left out, but you get the idea. The longest distance is 63 miles and most are a lot shorter! If your family lived in one of those areas, it would certainly not have been a stretch for them to have moved to another. ______________________________ And because the question that prompted me to suggest that PA, MD, and DE ancestors might have moved easily across those state lines and not have traveled far started with a discussion about the location of the Nottingham Meeting (Quaker), I decided to look to see if there were adjacent Nottinghams in MD and PA. There aren't today. But there are a number of Nottinghams in both states (not to mention a couple of DE places named Nottingham). In fact, there are two Nottinghams in PA -- one is near Philadelphia and one is near the MD line very close to Sylmar, PA, AND very close to Sylmar, MD. Also, there are two Nottinghams in MD, one in Baltimore Co. and one in Anne Arundel Co. I have not been able to get Yahoo to go from one Nottingham, PA, to the other Nottingham, PA, nor from one Nottingham, MD, to the other. I think I could if I had their zip codes, but I'm not obsessed enough to start that search!! In case you are interested, Yahoo Maps states that Nottingham, MD (and I don't know which one it is using) to Nottingham, PA (the one close to Philadelphia) is 107.9. When you are thinking in terms of how close one community is to another for our ancestors to have made a move, even at the turn of the last century, even this move is not all that far. A final note: If there was a Nottingham Meeting move, it seems to me that the move (assuming the community it existed in shared its name) would have more likely been between the Nottingham, PA, that is near the MD line and only a sneeze away from Sylmar, PA, (which I can't get Yahoo Maps to locate on its mileage locator) and West Nottingham, MD, which is only 6.1 miles from Sylmar, PA. Perhaps Nottingham near the MD line and West Nottingham in MD were the two communities that were associated with the Nottingham Meeting??? (In which case, the meeting moved, not the state line!) Karen

    1. Bristow wife -- origins unidentified. HELP!
    2. Dorothy and Kathy (who have been discussing Bristow, Carter and other Bristow connections on the Carter list) and other BRISTOW, McCULLOUGH, and CARTER researchers, I know it's a long shot, but it never hurts to ask!! I have a McCullough/Bristow marriage in my family tree, but have never been able to learn anything else about the Bristow. ANDREW JACKSON McCULLOUGH (sometimes called Andrew, sometimes Jackson, and maybe A.J. as per various records) who was born on Feb. 25, 1840, son of OLIVER McCULLOUGH and ELIZABETH (perhaps maiden name was LEADER) married ELIZABETH BRISTOW on March 03, 1852, in Cecil Co., MD. Many of the Cecil Co. residents of that time were former Chester Co. and Delaware Co., PA, residents (e.g., several of my Carter lines and perhaps Andrew's father, Oliver McCullough. (Census reports say Oliver was born in PA, but so far I have not located where. Oliver and brother Jethro (who was born in DE near both the PA and MD borders) moved to Cecil Co. about 1840-1850. The CARTERs and McCULLOUGHs were certainly acquainted with each other as per data found in wills, newspaper articles, etc. They also have more than one example where they married into the same families, e.g., TULL, CARTER, CLOUD, and maybe BRISTOW. [In a mini-Twilight Zone event, four generations after OLIVER McCULLOUGH's generation, my grandparents who certainly did not know they both descended from the same CLOUD line (off Wm. CLOUD, Chester, Co., PA) married each other -- having no idea that they were, in fact, fifth cousins, once removed! Perhaps MABEL MARION McCULLOUGH and CHARLES GEORGE CARTER were 'destined' to be together to rejoin their ancesters.... oo-oo-oo-oo (Twilight Zone music, please!). So even when the families left their commonly shared lands, maybe there was some sort of spooky FATE thing going on that brought the families back together again!] SO, TO THE REAL QUESTIONS NEEDING ANSWERED: Did the Bristows of Elizabeth's line begin in PA and move to MD, too? Did Andrew Jackson McCullough wander back into PA where he was born (like his father) to garner himself a wife? Did Elizabeth have a family or was she just found under a cabbage head? For anyone interested, here is a little on their children. ANDREW JACKSON McCULLOUGH and ELIZABETH BRISTOW had three children that I've been able to identify: (1) ANDREW J. McCULLOUGH who was, according to his tombstone, was the son of ANDREW J. and ELIZABETH McCULLOUGH and was, when he died, 38 years and 10 months old. Unfortunately, the tombstone is worn and his death date is illegible so I know neither his death or birth date. He is buried in the North East United Methodist Cemetery in North East, Cecil Co., MD. (2) EUGENIA McCULLOUGH was born in March 1859 (perhaps March 11, 1859). According to her tombstone inscription, she died on June 11, 1859, at the age of 3 months (no day number listed). (3) RUDOLPH McCULLOUGH was born in March 1859. According to his tombstone inscription, he died on October 31, 1860. Like their brother, EUGENIA and RUDOLPH, are buried in the North East United Methodist Cemetery. The plot is listed as purchased by J.J. McCOLLOUGH (sic) who was the brother of OLIVER McCULLOUGH (the father of ANDREW JACKSON McCULLOUGH, grandfather of the twins). The common stone for both children states they are the children of AND'W and ELIZABETH McCULLOUGH. Do any of you BRISTOW (or McCULLOUGH!) researchers recognize this couple? (I can only hope!) Karen Carter

    3. Thanks, Debbie. That was a fascinating read. I did find a creditor named John Maghee and son who provided shingles but no poor/sick/crazy/crippled Magee's, thank heaven. The folks I'm looking for have turned up in New Castle Co. and Sussex Co. though. I've found them on censuses but what I need are documents that would link one or the other to our James Tully Magee, b. 1784. I've been looking in what probate and Orphan's Court records I've been able to access without much luck...did find an order for sale of land for a Samuel Magee, married to Eleanor, so I think that is one of them but unfortunately no children were named in that record. However, there is undocumented reference (from a family tree online) to their having a son named James T. Magee. We also have some evidence from probate and church records that a Thomas McGee, of New Castle Co., may have married a widow Elizabeth McIntire Allen in 1774 but no definite proof that he is James's father either, except that a Robert Allen died and left a legacy to his half brother James T. Magee, minor, in 1791. But family lore has it that my ggg grandfather was named Thomas and that he married a "Scot"...so that's been our closest hit so far. I appreciate your taking time to write with that link. It was interesting to say the least....hard times back then even for the healthy folks and especially hard for those with ill health. Thanks again. Connie Magee Rinaldi Debbie wrote: > These are a bit hard to read, but if you had people in Kent Co...
