There is a bill in the US House of Representatives that will restrict access to birth certificates. It is apparently going quickly through committee approvals. If you want to read more about it and how to contact your representative read the Ancestry Daily News online at www.ancestry.com/dailynews the October 7, 2004 issue. You will see where to go to read the bill, what the FGS is doing and how you can help. If this is an inappropiate use of this list, I apologize, but it seemed an important issue for all genealogists/family historians. Ginny Thomas
Can I ask where you found this marriage info on the web? I'd like to know the site to search. It was just a fluke entry on Ancestry - not a database... One of those sites where you ask if anyone knows about a certain person of a certain surname. Karen, Are you a descendent of Samuel Peterson from New Castle County born abt 1633 from Finland ? Paul
I keep finding more on this family, but it also keeps convoluting! I just found this on the web: Marriage Register, New Castle county, Delaware 1911-page 59 Register Entry #: 55614 Groom: Walter E. Gossling Age: 22 Nation/state: Pa. Residence: Phila. Pa. Occupation: mec. Eng. Bride: Mary H. Craven Age: 20 Nation/state: Md. Residence: Ridley Ponds, Pa. Groom's parents: Walter Gossling/Marg't B. Graham Bride's parents: Wm. D. Craven/Hannah ?. Myer Date of marriage: Apl. 29, 1911 Person solemnizing marriage: Albert E. Clay Date of registration: June 30, 1911 Now the above mentioned Marg't B. GRAHAM is, I am sure, Margaret Bowen STOCKHAM. So it would appear she married twice. Margaret is the sister of Jura & Alonzo STOCKHAM, and the daughter of George and Margaret B. STOCKHAM. Does this tie in with anyone? I am sending copies to DENEWCAS-L and Philly-Roots-L. Vince Summers

Good morning list, For those of you, who have asked about orphanages in Delaware Co., PA. I came across the following in the Delaware County Daily Times, dated Sun. 19 Sep 2004. On page (2) there is the column: "Other Times" 100 YEARS AGO Ground has been broken for the big Philadelphia Orphanage in Wallingford. When complete, it will be one of the largest and handsomest institutions in the state. If you would like more info on this article, the Dela. Co. Historical Soc. has The Chester Times for 1904 on micro film. Please do not e-mail me for more info -- I do not have any more than this. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)
Dear Listers, Does anyone have access to a phone book or city directory for Wilmington for 1939-40-41 or perhaps later. I'm looking for the address of Mrs. Stubbs' boardinghouse. It was a three-story house in three apartments on an unknown street a couple of blocks from the corner of Delaware and Pennsylvania Avenues. The back porches were on Penn. Mrs. Stubbs was not a resident of the house. In 1940, the second floor tenants were M/M Francis D. Wright and the third floor were M/M Hjalmar Breit. Thank you very much. Anne W. Brown, St. Leonard MD
Frances, The author of "History of Delaware" is J. Thoms Scharf This is the title page: _http://www.accessible.com/amcnty/DE/Delaware/titlepage.htm_ (http://www.accessible.com/amcnty/DE/Delaware/titlepage.htm) This is the table of contents: _http://www.accessible.com/amcnty/DE/Delaware/contents.htm_ (http://www.accessible.com/amcnty/DE/Delaware/contents.htm) Also have an AARON in my family. Maybe we could compare notes Take care. Vickie
Frances; It is the J. Thomas Scharf book, originally published in 1888. It covers 1609-1888, it's a great book. Carol
Carol, could you tell me who is the author-compiler & publisher of the "HISTORY OF DELAWARE". Thanks. Frances
Marty, sorry to say I don't know anything about Rev. Robt Clay. I wonder if you would look to see if any AARON, LISTER (LEISTER), or BIDDLE marriages are listed. Any information would be most welcome. Frances
Rev. Robert Clay was rector of Immanuel Church, New Castle, for 36 years and died in Dec 1831. He was the son of Slator Clay and brother of Rev. Jehu Clay. This from 'History of Delaware'. Hope it helps, Carol
I have a page of marriages performed between 1810 and 1815 in New Castle Co., Delaware, by Rev.Robert Clay. Does anyone know what denomination and church he served? Thanks. Marty Fulton
That is just great! Not so much the entry you list, though that is very nice, but, rather, that you have such a book. Do you - perchance - see a Judith BROWN? Or any other entries for Jeremias (Jeremiah)? For instance, do you see a child? Or do you see children for Jeremiah and Maria? This is pretty much the biggest chance I have of breaking an age-old impediment. Thanks, Vince Summers Mpmannon6900@aol.com wrote: >I have the book " Early Church Records of New Castle County, Delaware" Vol. 2 >Old Swedes Church 1713-1799. > On page 218 Nov. 6, 1751 Jeremias Collet and Maria Stedham L [means >license} > > >
I have the book " Early Church Records of New Castle County, Delaware" Vol. 2 Old Swedes Church 1713-1799. On page 218 Nov. 6, 1751 Jeremias Collet and Maria Stedham L [means license}
In the 1700's, I find I am now searching for my COLLET(T) outside Philadelphia. I have a marriage in 1757: George KILLINGER m. Judah COLLET(T). Swedes' Church (Gloria Dei) Philadelphia. But Judah is a man's name - not a woman's. I think it was a mis-transcription or a mis-entry. Perhaps Judith was intended. Anyway, I find a very possible candidate for her parents as Jeremiah COLLET(T) m. Judith BROWN (Jeremiah later married a Maria STEDHAM - a Swede!). So it seems quite possible to me that Judith Brown COLLETT may have been from the Delaware area. I know that some of the records of Delaware church called Holy Trinity or Old Swedes' were put online by: http://www.awesomegenealogy.com It appears to be a very nice firm, and if I had money to spend, I should certainly spend some - but I am stone cold broke, and do not have that option! So I am wondering if there is anyone onboard who has data, a connection, or knowledge of any URL whereby I can obtain data for the timeframe of the 1740's? The only known child of Judith (and I haven't yet received any proof of this one) was Rachel born 1745 (I think I have her name right). Thanks, Vince Summers
Do any listers have the email address of the "Friends" of the above as opposed to the email address of the place itself?? I have found the tel no of the Friends once before but lost it! ( it would be useful to have BUT..........) As I am in Australia, the email address is preferred for obvious reasons. I am distantly related to the Irish husband of Bessie Bringhurst. Any other info about Rockwood that you may be able to refer me to would also be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Elaine Wade
