    3. Did you ever hear of "Russell's Grove" in Penns Grove? On the 1920 census I had an ancestor living there. His surname was Russell. It was right on the river. His wife ran a boarding home - mostly dye works laborers. 2. I'll guess Robert Peterson lived adjoining the Strimples from Salem Co,NJ The Strimples are on the 1820 census next to him. They were forced to move about 1970, when the dam of Lake Harsha, then called East Fork Lake, was built. Slade Rd. Mile plus dead end Slade Rd east of Rt 222 in s e Batavia township,Clermont Co,Ohio. [4-5 miles s e of Batavia-the dam is the western most feature of Lake Harsha. It consists of a natural mile long hill, with a saddle dam on the north end plugging a low place, and a cement dam blocking the creek on the sw corner. I'LL SAY Robert Peterson lived on that mile long ridge [Slade farm],or just across the East Fork creek from it,to the west. My own Swede,Rev Jesse [Gustofsson]Justice, lived 3 miles east,on Rt 125.Tate township. He was born on Old Man's creek, that seperates Salem and Gloucester Co. Peter Justice,Jr was his grandfather, who marries Anders Lock's dau.Andrew Lock was married to Casper Fish's sister, who was the widow of Hans Peterson. Anders Lock died of a rattlesnake bite in1716. He's lived on both banks of the Delaware River in the area of Chester town [Upland]. His father, the Swedish Lutherian minister, had married himself to Mons Lom's daughter, after Young stole Rev Lock's 1st wife

    2. It's amazing that alot of families seem to travel the same path at that time, living in the same counties and the same states at times. I would like to find out if the other Peterson's were related to mine, I'm sure they were. Robert lived in Brandywine Hundred, Delaware and crossed the Delaware frequently, to Salem County, NJ. There were a few Peterson families living in that county during his time and he even lived there for a time. Would it be a good assumption to say that Robert lived outside of the "downtown" Batavia area since he would have been a farmer? It seems that the downtown area was more for professional people like lawyers, merchants, etc. but I could be wrong since I don't live in the area. That's the way it seemed to me when I visited there. It's very quaint. S. most Batavia township had an Union church known as Republican that today is the Mt Holly Church of Christ. The new Latter Day Saints- Morman church were among those worshiping in Republican. The Isaac Higbee's, Thomas String [Swede] and Peter Conover were Jerseymen who became Mormans in ClerMONT cO,oHIO,AND MOVed on to w Illinois, and Utah. John Conover lived within 1\2 mile of what became,1970's,the dam of Lake Harsha. His family was akin to the Swedes and Dutch. He moved just north of Pike Co,Ill. I'll say John Conover lived under 2 miles from Robert Peterson in sw Ohio. Any educated guess as to where George Petrson lived before Williamsburg,Oh and Pleasant Mills,NJ would have Salem Co,NJ AT THE HEAD OF THE LIST.

    3. Can someone comment a little more about the relationship over the years, between the people of part-Swedish ancestry who lived near Raccoon (Swedesboro) in Salem Co, NJ --and those who lived in Delaware around the Swedish Lutheran Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) and upper Delaware areas?? It makes sense that people in Delaware might migrate to Chester Co. PA, but why would there be so much moving back and forth across the Delaware River?? Please look at this family from Pencader and St George's and Red Lion --seem to have lived near the borders of all of these. This is one family who may have been back and forth between DE and NJ a few times in a few hundred years. HOLTEN, HOLTON, HALTON, probably orig, of New Sweden, lived in each state at various times. Many wills and land docs from colonial NJ show this name; need help connecting to ours. I am looking for the parents of the man shown here: Spencer HOLTON and son, Spencer S (Sewell or 'Suel') HOLTON. 1830 > DELAWARE > NEW CASTLE > PENCADER Series: M19 Roll: 12 Page: 78 Spencer HOLTON Males 5-10, one (Spencer Sewell); " 10- 15, one; 15- 20, two; 40-50, one (Spencer HOLTON, head). Females 5 10, two; 10- 15, one; 30- 40 one ; - 70, one. Slave, male, 1-- 24, one. Spencer HOLTON d. about 1870. Spencer HOLTON's wife, Mary Anne ELIASON, should be about 22 yrs old; born 1809-- this is probably a typo. The son, Spencer Sewell HOLTON is probably the "S.S. Holten" listed as Town Commissioner for 1877 and 1884 --Middletown, St George's Hundred, Newcastle Co., Delaware. (see Scarf, History of Delaware). He married Mary Frances ELLISON 1839-1928; they appear in Middletown in 1910 Census: Spencer S. HOLTON, age 72. living with wife, Mary F, age 69, and daughter May or Mary May, age 30, on Cass St, in Middletown, DE. His son, Curtis Bennet HOLTEN, married Ellen DALE (1874-1949) of Odessa. This couple had 5 girls and one son, lived in DE, then near Philadelphia, and finally in Clemonton in what was then Camden County, NJ. The daughters married and had families in southern NJ, near Haddonfield and the surrounding areas. ELLISON, ELIASON and HOLTON all appear in Scharf's. There were several ministers and also schoolteachers in this family. Have more family info if anyone wants to see these or can help with this. Thank you Liz J

    3. ANDERSONs appear in "Annals of the Swedes on the Delaware," by the Rev. Jehu Curtis Clay (Rector of the Swedish Churches in Philadelphia and its vicinity) Published in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by J. C. Pechin, 1835 Online here: http://www.ls.net/~newriver/de/swede.htm This entire work seems endlessly fascinating to me. See Note C, P 50, which gives heads of families there in New Sweden 1693. A real census! This list gives number of individuals in each household. Not all stayed; names changed yet as last names superceded the old patonymics. These are listed; one must be yours (hope I found them all): Joran Anderson, Johan Anderson, Hindrick Anderson. Also: Anders Rambo, Anders Bengtson, Anders Bonde, Anders Nilsson, Anders Jonasson, Anders Wibler, Anders Persson Longaker, Anders Homman, Anders Hindrickson, Anders Sinnika, Anders Weinom, and Anders Robertson. Not long after that, three men named 'Anders' signed a document in 1700, sent up to Phildaelphia in protest of the conditions. The Swedes in the colony by 1700 were feeling very pressed by the inceasing population of those who came after the English took over in the 1660's. "...address of the Swedes, to the Legislature of the Province, setting forth certain grievances which the document itself sufficiently explains." "To the Representatives of the Province of Pennsylvania, met in General Assembly at Philadelphia, this first day of June, 1700..." (And the whole text of the letter) The signers: "Gabriel Cock, Eric Keen, John Stille" and "John Tanek, Hans George, Otto Esrnest Cock, Mortea Mortenson, Peter Peterson, Gosta Gostason, John Aretson, Hans Bonde, Mattitias Nezelius, Lors Mortenson, Anders Bonde Olle Bonde, Anders Mortenson, Gabriel Friend, Valentine Kock, John Ellet, Andrew Longacre, John Hindricksen, John Mortenson, Matthias Keen" There are probably other mentions of the names you want... use the "find" function in your browser. I can do more links if anybody is interested. There is another very nice site about New Sweden; also interaction with people from Finland who had also come to Delaware and NJ very early. Somewhere exists a series of lists of the passengers who left from Sweden in the several voyages they sent out to this part of the New World. Have fun, Mawmaw. 2. Thanks for all of the information. Sara and Dean below were my Petersons. Samuel Winner, who married Sarah, was also mentioned numerous times in various papers for my Peterson's when they moved to Pike County, Illinois. Robert Peterson had two wives. The first marriage, Catherine Simpkins (NJ), had Dean, Ezekial and Martha Peterson. The second marriage, Elizabeth ? (DE), had George (my ggg grandfather), William, Sarah, and Robert. We're trying to connect all of the children without a doubt and I know that Robert Peterson was the only Peterson living in Batavia, even though Williamsburgh is only about 5 miles away with the other Petersons. Does anyone know when the other Peterson's moved into the Clermont County area? Answering this question could help tremendously. Robert died about 1834 in Batavia but we haven't been able to locate a grave for him and it seems that all the cemeteries have been walked through and documented. Robert also was a "tenant" to land or a building in Tate Township the same time he had land in Batavia. Not sure what this means at this point. I would still like to go back to Batavia and just browse the courthouse, all of the cemeteries, etc. I couldn't find much when I went to the Library back in November. 1. Naturalization Records aft. 1906
    2. Naturalization Records aft. 1906 USCIS (formerly INS) files, known as C-Files, include a duplicate copy of all naturalization records dated after September 26, 1906. All C-Files contain at least a copy of the Declaration of Intention to become a US Citizen (to 1952), Petition for Naturalization, and Certificate of Naturalization. Occasional files contain additional documents or correspondence. C-Files include all US naturalizations from all States and Territories, and from all courts (Federal, State, and local). INS maintains an index to the C-Files, and can retrieve individual records based on name, date of birth, and place of birth. C-Files from 1906 to 1956 have been microfilmed, and are available via Freedom of Information/Privacy Act request to INS Headquarters in Washington, DC Information about making a request is found here: http://uscis.gov/graphics/aboutus/foia/request.htm Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

    2. As per "Bi-centenary Memorial of JEREMIAH CARTER Who Came to the Province of Pennsylvania in 1682" by THOMAS MAXWELL POTTS published in Canonsburg, PA, in 1883, I have: ROBERT CLOUD (b. 2-2-1722/23, DE; d. 4-2-1901, DE) who married MAGDELEN PETERSON (b. 7-14-1729, DE, d. 12-8-1779, DE). Their daughter: MARGARET CLOUD (b. 6-11-1753; d. 10-20-1827) married JOSEPH CARTER (b. 11-17-1749, PA, prob. at Cartersville, Chester Co.; d. 2-2-1830). Both Margaret and Joseph Carter were buried at Mount Hope Methodist Episcopal Church, west of Village Green in Aston Township, PA. I wonder, does MAGDELEN PETERSON fits into any of your Peterson lines? Other than her name as the wife of ROBERT CLOUD and mother of MARGARET CLOUD, I have nothing on her.
