My GGFather is Eugene Merritt BURRIS b abt 1859 in Delaware and his brother is J.F. BURRIS b abt 1851in Delaware. I got the information from a 1880 California census. It showed their ages of Eugene as 21, a Student and J.F. as 29, a Teacher. I am 69 and I am trying to finish Our Family Tree for my sons, their children and my great grand child. If you are related to them or related to me or know of them please contact me. Regards Jean Benson [email protected]
I am trying to find out information on a trading post that was supposed to have existed in McDonough in around 1835-1845. It was apparently a stagecoach stop at the time as well. If any of you have any information about it, particularly the owners, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Judy
John, I agree with you. I do not think this is the same family. I looked at the dates again in the records of the Old Swedes Church. My John was baptized in 1767. In 1815 he would have been ca 48, not 28. I sure wish I could find just one Elliott family that connected to mine. Thanks for the info. and good luck in your research. Hi Anita, The probate record is just an inventory of his goods and money owed to him by Dupont (no real estate). The only name mentioned is George Welsh (and this is very hard to read it might not be Welsh) who owed John $100. Quite a bit of money back then. I don't think this is the same family. Am I pretty sure this John Welsh arrived from Ireland about 1808. John, my John Welsh was in New Castle and was married to Margaret Elliott. He had a twin sister by the name of Anne. They were baptised in the Old Swedes church in 1767. I have to get some probates out and look at them. His mother was Eleanor Elliott, and his father was John Welsh. He married his cousin. His wife, Margaret was the sister of my grandfather, John Elliott. I noticed you plan to go to Wilmington in October. I had planned a trip in Oct. also, but I am not certain now. I have been there twice, but still looking for addl. information. Several of these people are buried in the Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery. Don't know about John and Margaret. This is a large cemetery, but I think there is an index at the library on Market St. A lot of my Elliotts' are buried in the church yard of the Old Swedes church, but believe his mother Eleanor, Mark Elliott and my grandmother Jane or Jean are buried at this cemetery. They are not buried in the Old Swedes churchyard. Some of them were buried at another cemetery and moved to the Wilmington and Brandywine. If you have the probate would you please let me know the gist of it. I thought it was strange that they only had two children, but never suspected John had passed away so young. Hello, I am new to this list and I know there were Shoults' in Newcastle in the late 1700's as their wills were probated there. My mother's maiden name was Shoults and I am trying to find out where they came from originally. Our first one was Charles and he was married to Drusilla Howard, they both are buried in Ross County, Ohio. One of their children was born in Rockingham County, VA, his name was John b. Oct 21, 1781 and I have two more children listed for them but as we all know they had large families so I know I am missing a few. I know that they spoke German for quite some time but were bilingual and I would love to find a tie with some other families. One of the wills was for Conrad Shoults and Conrad was my grandfather's middle name so hopefully there will be a connection there. Any help would certainly be appreciated. Hi Anita, My John Welsh died in New Castle Co. in 1815. He was about 28 years old and married to Margaret. I do have his probate record and the will of his brother-in-law Peter Shepperd. Peter died at the same time. Is this close to your family? I also have a George and Hugh Welsh in the same area, (Brandywine) who might be related. Hi List, Could someone tell me what the requirements were to get married in New Castle Co., in 1816. Was a bond and/or a marriage license required or did folks just go to a local church and ask the Minister to marry them. If it makes a difference this is for a Protestant couple. Thanks John
