I have looked at the "Delaware Towns & Places" on the Delaware Gen. Soc. web site, but there is no mention of : MINK TOWN in Brandywine Hundred. According to a couple of the Federal Censuses, several of my ancestors lived around there. I grew up on Foulk Road (Highland Orchards), so am familiar with the area, but have never heard of Mink Town. Any idea of what road or roads the area was around? Good morning lists, I'm posting this info because I think it is of great importance & interest to us in bordering states, who may be doing genealogy research in NJ. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) The New Jersey Dept. of Health (just since August 1) has relaxed the restrictions on getting some vital records again!! Check out the NJ Dept. of Health, Vital Records website: http://www.state.nj.us/health/vital/vital.htm. You can get a copy of their brand new application form there. You can get the application in an Adobe format or in a Word document. As of August 1 - births over 80 years old are considered "genealogical" and the application form states that "you need only supply the name of the individual recorded on the vital record, the county where the event occurred, and the year the event occurred." The same is true for Marriages over 50 years old and Deaths over 40 years old. The copies will be uncertified copies and will be stamped "For Informational Purposes Only." They also promise to do searches of multiple years again as long as the records fall into the "genealogical" category. This is a major improvement over the recent restrictions and should make life much simpler for us all. You do need to submit a photocopy of your photo ID with your application -- or "two approved non-photo IDs." Merrilee: Also, if you are local - Birth records through 1923 are available on microfilm at the NJ State Archives and you can look at them yourself for free. (Copies there are 50 cents.)
There was a Delaware Sanatorium and Emily P.Bissell Hospital. Delaware Archives has info on this. Good Luck, Lee
What Barbara said makes sense. I have a little to add, though. My ancestor had TB in GA, she died in 1924, but on the 1920 census she was in the State Sanitarium, many counties away from where she was born, raised, and buried. That sanitarium is still in use today (believe it or not!). Anyway, maybe you could find out where the DE sanitarium was, or do a soundex search? Her death cert should give you her residence. Also the census reports lists patients in the hospital, even shows county homes. If she died in 1914, I'd try the 1910 census. But get her death cert first. Barbara Johnson ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, August 13, 2002 12:00 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Irish Relative Greetings, I am trying to discover what happened to my grandfather's sister, Sarah Jane Barnett. Her family consisting of father, Robert Barnett, mother, Elizabeth Grier Barnett, and brother, Robert, Jr. came to the United States from County Donegal, Ireland some time between Robert's birth in 1872 and James' birth (in Wilmington, Delaware) in 1874. She was married to John James Hartley on September 21, 1893 and they had one son, Robert Barnett Hartley, who died during World War I. John James Hartley died in 1897 in Chester, Pennsylvania but according to the 1900 census, Sarah's son, Robert, was living with his grandparents in Wilmington, Delaware. Sarah died in 1914 from tuberculosis and the church records at her death, showed that she was living in Wilmington. Could anyone tell me if there was a facility in Wilmington in 1914 that helped people with tuberculosis? Because she was suffering from TB would she have been living at this facility rather than with her family? Is there any way of obtaining information from such facilities from that far back in time? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Jane MacLachlan
I am very interested in your question and I hope you get some answers! My greatgrandfather, Arthur McCloskey, does not appear in DE1900 census although he did not die until 1909. His wife Ellen is listed as Head of Household. Because he had TB we think he might have been in an institution in Philadelphia. I hope someone answers your query. Greetings, I am trying to discover what happened to my grandfather's sister, Sarah Jane Barnett.
For many years we have researched the history of this branch of the Poole Family who lived and died in Delaware County, Pennsylvania and Newcastle County, Delaware. We have traced this direct line back to Thomas Poole (1784-1836) and Elizabeth Skillings Poole (1786-1870). Thomas and Elizabeth had the following 10 children: 1. Charlotte Poole (1807-1871) married Wesley Clark 2. Sarah Poole b. 1809 3. Wesley Poole (1811-1904) married Mary Williams 4. Richard Poole (1814-1896) married Sarah Ann Brown Second wife Lydia H. Miller Remington 5. Clayton Poole (1817-1829) 6. Mary Ann Poole b. 1819 7. Jane Eliza Poole (1822-1883) married Samuel Grubb 8. Lewis Poole (1825-1876) 9. Emily Poole (1828-1900) married Davis Barlow 10. Adaline Poole (1831-1913) married Edmund Jones (Additional information about this line is available at the web site below) I am now seeking the father of Thomas Poole. If anyone has any information about the Richard Poole listed in the 1790 census of Lower Chichester Township, Delaware Co., PA - having 5 free white males under the age of sixteen, please contact me. Could I please get a lookup for the Sanderson family in any of the Wilmington directories?
Hi List, A friend of mine did research on a POOLE Family, only to find out, it was not her POOLE Family, please read the following she has sent me to pass on to others: In 1763, Richard POOLE was received on certificate at Darby Monthly Meeting from Enescorphy, (Enniscorthy), Co. Wexford, Ireland. He was the son of Thomas POOLE and Jane (Brown) of Wexford. On 1775-6-15 he m. Agnes BROWN (daughter of Joseph) at Concord Monthly Meeting, PA. They lived and died in Upper and Lower Chichester Twp., Delaware Co., PA, (Chester Co. until 1789) & had a connection to New Castle Co., DE. Richard's sister, Sarah POOLE, also came to Delaware Co., PA. and attended the marriage ceremony. According to records from Ireland, Richard and Agnes had one daughter. I do not know the name of the daughter, nor do I have any records on his sister, Sarah. This Richard POOLE is not connected to our POOLE family and when I discovered this, I stopped researching this line. I have many records that I would be willing to share, (Quaker Meeting Records; marriage record; will and inventory account.) Please contact: Mary L.
