    3. The JDBGMGR.EXE Virus Scare - from http://www.helpmedoc.com/ How a Hoax Becomes a Virus. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Also known as the Teddy Bear virus, jdbgmgr.exe is actually not a software viral infection at all. In fact, this new threat to your computer has no attachment, no download and no fancy hacker code. So, how does it cause it's damage and dismay? It does it the old fashioned way . as a con. This menace comes to you as an email - often from a friend - which warns you about a harmful file that you might have on your computer. The file is recognizable because it's icon is a teddy bear. The rest of the email has crisp, clear instructions on how to remove this file from your computer. Unfortunately, this email is a hoax. Those who follow it's instructions wind up deleting the Microsoft Java Debugger from their system - a file which is needed by both Windows and Internet Explorer. Additionally, those caught up in this devious con game often forward the email to their friends and associates, who are further convinced because the information came from a known and reliable source! Pranks such as this are more than annoying - they can cause people to damage their own operating system or even delete important information. So - is it the Teddy Bear Hoax or the Teddy Bear Virus? Avoid Shooting Yourself in the Foot The new term for these malicious emails is "West Virginia Viruses", named after the folk tales of West Virginia squirrel hunters who - in their enthusiasm - were prone to shooting themselves in the foot. West Virginia viruses are the newest con game on the web. Your best protection is an up-to-date antivirus program. If there is a real problem, they'll know about it before you do. Second, check your sources. Ask whomever sent you the email to verify that a file is actually harmful before deleting it. How to Restore jdbgmgr.exe File For users of Windows 95, 98, XP and NT you will need to reinstall the Microsoft Virtual Machine. Microsoft is aware of the file jdbgmgr.exe problem and has detailed instructions on how to download and restore jdbgmgr.exe to your computer. There is good news for Windows 2000 and Me users - Windows will reinstall your "Teddy Bear" file automatically as part of the Windows file protection feature. As a final note, this ruse and others like it are widespread on the web presently. Please take the time now to inform your friends and associates about the jdbgmgr.exe hoax - and ask them to send the information to their associates. Knowledge is our best defense against such cons, so please help spread the cure -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, September 23, 2002 7:14 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: PLEASE CHECK FOR A VIRUS THAT I MAY HAVE SENT YOU This is a scam that I fell for on another group. It is not a real virus. It is a program on the computer. When you see the teddy bear you are sure that you have been infected. I know you can read about it on sites that tell about internet hoax but I no longer have that link. Don't delete it like I did!! If you do it can effect some programs. Nancy Nolan

    3. I found this on a hoax security page.....http://www.f-secure.com/hoaxes/jdbgmgr.shtml Hoax Warnings NAME: jdbgmgr.exe virus hoax ALIAS: Teddy Bear hoax NOTE: On 21st of May 2002, a new virus using this hoax was found. The virus sends messages coming apparently from Symantec corporation and contains a warning on the JDBGMGR hoax - plus a virus attached to it. In April 2002 there appeared a hoax message concerning a new virus that was reportedly discovered in Windows utility JDBGMGR.EXE. The jdbgmgr is a standard windows component that is found in every windows installation, it is used as Java debugger manager in Microsoft Java runtime engine. We checked several versions of this utility from Windows installations and found nothing malicious in them. Please ignore this hoax or anything similar warning about jdbgmgr.exe and don't pass it on. -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Gallas [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, September 23, 2002 6:09 PM To: [email protected] Subject: PLEASE CHECK FOR A VIRUS THAT I MAY HAVE SENT YOU Hi everyone. Unfortunatley,I received the following notice today from a friend. Sure enough I found the teddybear virus and it is easy to remove. Please check your computer. You are receiving this notice because you are in my address book--family,friend .......... My address book has been infected by a virus. As a result, so has yours because your address was in my book. I was advised about the virus today. The virus is called: jdbgmgr.exe. The virus can not be detected by norton or mcaffee anti-virus programs. It sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by messenger and by the address book, whether or not you send email. To get rid of the virus is easy. Do the following: 1. Go to start, then "find" or "search" 2. In "files/folders", write the name of the virus: jdbgmgr.exe 3. Be sure to search in your "C" drive 4. Click "find" or "search" 5. The virus has a teddy bear logo with the name jdbgmgr.exe 6. Right click and delete the virus 7. Go to the recycle bin and delete the virus there If you find the virus, you must contact everyone in your address book. Sorry about this - but the good news is that the virus is easy to delete. I received the message today that I had the virus and it took all of 10 seconds to get rid of it. I WILL BE TAKING MANY NAMES OUT OF MY ADDRESS BOOK AS SOON AS THIS EMAIL IS SENT TO PREVENT THIS HAPPENING WITH SO MANY NAMES IN MY BOOK AGAIN!!

    2. Vickie, When you get to the intersection of rt. 100, at St. Joseph's make a right. Go down a bit until you come to the next intersection, at the light you will see Buck Road. If you go left it will take you out to Greenville, But if you go right and keep going straight it will take you to the gates to the library (If you follow the signs to Christ Church it will take you there) further down the road is the building they call the Soda House that houses tons of valuable information. All you need is the library card, so you will need to stop at the library to get that. They have a helpful staff but you have to have a fairly good idea of the time frame you are looking for they have manuscripts and such. They do have a copy fee. I don't remember what it is but it is minimal. Let me know if this helps and have a great day. Sharon

Unfortunatley,I received the following > notice today from a friend. Sure enough I found the > teddybear virus and it is easy to remove. Please check > your computer. You are receiving this notice because > you are in my address book--family,friend .......... BeeJay has been the victim of a hoax. Don't follow the directions in his/her e-mail message. Before believing an alert, I make it a practice to go to one of the sites dedicated to helping us determine whether a virus warning is real or not -- sometimes, the "warning" is even designed to make us do bad things to our computers like this hoax does. (Don't panic if you followed instructions. The changes you made are fairly benign.) Below, is what Urban Legends (http://www.snopes.com) has to say about the so-called "jdbgmgr.exe" virus. (If you were unaware of websites dedicated to helping people learn the truth about hoaxes, contact me and I'll send you a list of a few of the better ones. Since not every hoax-tracking website discovers every hoax at the same time, I check additional websites if I don't find it at first.) Virus name: JDBGMGR.EXE. Status: Hoax. Example: [Collected on the Internet, 2002] Origins: Like the <A HREF="http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/sulfnbk.htm">SULFNBK.EXE</A> hoax, this bogus virus warning (also known as the "Bear Virus") attempts to lure gullible users into deleting perfectly innocuous, standard Windows files from their systems. In this case the target file is JDBGMGR.EXE, a Java Debug Manager program used by the Microsoft Java runtime engine. This file is included as part of a standard Windows installation and is not a "virus." (The icon for this file is a graphic of a bear like the one shown to the left.) If you deleted this file, don't sweat it -- JDBGMGR.EXE is only important to programmers who use Microsoft Visual J++ 1.1 to develop Java programs. Its absence will not cause your PC to stop working or interfere with your applications, so if you're not a Java developer, you don't have to worry about restoring it. Consider the experience a lesson learned about the perils of believing and acting upon unverified e-mail warnings. (Windows 2000 and Windows ME include a Windows File Protection (WFP) feature that will recover shared files such as JDBGMGR.EXE if they are overwritten or deleted, but users of other Windows operating systems can only retrieve JDBGMGR.EXE by reinstalling the Microsoft <A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm">Virtual Machine</A> (VM) component.) See the link below for more information on and recovery procedures for JDBGMGR.EXE. 3. Hi Barb, Thanks for the heads up on parking. John Barbara Gallas wrote: >Unless there have been major changes recently at the University's visitors parking lot, I wouldn't attempt parking a motor home. You can email [email protected] for information. I strongly advise doing this and get a map of the town--one-way streets can get you driving in circles. It's a great place and you can't beat the library's hours: until midnight every night except Friday and Saturday and then it's until 8 p.m. For loads of information on the library and how to contact them, try www.lib.udel.edu/ >Barb > > > >

    2. DEAR CHARLIE MURPHY, SORRY TO DROP IN ON YOUR EMAIL. I NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE MURPHY AS YOUR LAST NAME. MY HUSBAND'S GRANDPARENTS WERE FRANCIS PATRICK FITZPATRICK & HANNAH MURPHY. THEY LIVED IN WILMINGTON,DE. THERE ARE 5 CHILDREN.ANY CONNECTION? I JUST HAVE INFO ON THEIR CHILDREN & GRANDCHILDREN. NOTHING ON THE PARENTS OF HANNAH MURPHY. I KNOW THAT FRANCIS PATRICK FITZPATRICK'S FATHER IS BELIEVED TO BE FRANCIS FITZPATRICK. THIS WOULD ALL BE IN NEW CASTLE COUNTY. SINCERELY, KANDY CAMPBELL FITZPATRICK

    2. Hi listers.....I've just returned from my second trip to Dover, DE & the St Archives (now as many know, located in a new spacious facility). As my HYATT-MURPHY lines were in New Castle Co between 1730-1830 my search there paid off with further small details; urge all who visit to be sure to use their expansive card file index for surnames, BMD, probate, & land records as a mere start. Charlie Murphy near Seattle.
